looking for answers on flyfishing.....

i’ve been leaning towards getting back in to fly fishing, thats all i did before i moved here from connecticut…it,s been awhile, could someone give me an idea how much it will cost me to start from scratch again…would appreciate it…thx bob

just take a trip down to charleston angler in west ashley or mt.p and see josh. he’ll fix ya up witha good combo for a good price. TFOs are good rods and not too expensive and i reccomend a lampson reel. how much are you looking to spend?

I really don’t know how much,i know i can get back in it real easy,so i guess i would want something thats good quality equipment,so what would your estimate be around…

only a dead fish goes with the flow.

good rods cost anywhere from around $175-800+ but i would recommend that whatever rod you get, make sure it has a lifetime warrenty or at least a 30 yr. For the reel, lampson makes a great reel. the velocity costs about $250 but there are many other companies out there. if you search therewas a thread not too long ago about setups and reels. Not sure if it ever sold, but there was a combo for sale a while back

the more you pay for a rod usually means better graphite, cork, and guides. The new flex guides are amazing you can bend them flat and they will spring right back to their origional shape.

BOB,thanks for your input,i really appreciate you taking the time on this subject,i will try and get down to charlston angler and see what they have…

I myself am just really getting into fly fishing and have been relying heavily on my friend Paul who is a guide down in the Keys as well as Josh at the Charleston Angler for help in my choice of gear. Here is Paul’s website http://www.stripstrikecharters.com. I do have a 4wt TFO that I use in freshwater and that I really think is a great rod, and with a lifetime no fault warranty you can’t beat the price. If you are serious about getting back into it and want a great salt water fly rod with a lifetime warranty, I would highly recommend a 9wt Thomas and Thomas Horizon II. I got mine for about $735.00 and this was the rod Paul had suggested. His rational for going with the 9wt was as follows: 1) on a flood tide you have a small fishing window, so with a little heavier rod you can put more pressure on the fish. This helps in not only landing the fish quicker, thus leaving you more time to catch/stalk more fish but also lessons the stress/revival time of the fish. 2) If you plan on ever going to the keys or south florida the 9wt can be used on tarpon of 60lbs or less, bone fish, permit, as well as the redfish here in Charleston. 3) and most importantly, the 9wt is easier to cast into the wind. He told me to go with Thomas and Thomas due to the fact he had tried just about every rod maker in the market and he strongly felt that Thomas was the best followed closely by Scott. As far as the reel goes, he recommended a Tibor Everglades. I think the Tibor I got from the Charleston Angler was somewhere in the neighborhood of $780.00, but you can get one far cheaper if you opt out of all the bells and whistles. I just figured, hell I am already tossing a lot of money on this venture might as well finish it out. I will say now that I love my Tibor, but Charlton is coming back to the fly reel market with his Mako reel at the end of this month. It is a little more expensive than the Tibor, but his older reels are THE Holy Grail of fly reels and now sell for about 3,000.00 a piece on ebay. I am waiting on the revi

you don’t need a high dollar reel…just one w/ a smooth drag. That okuma reel is 40 bucks or so.

I don’t know sh’t about flyfishing…but my setup suits me just fine

“If you can catch more fish then me then I will listen to your comments otherwise shut up and make a report on catching fish!”

"I am tired on internet losers who think that they need to haze the new charter captain. To me you are weak and lame. Post your catch reports not your jealous egos! "

check out Haddrell’s WA, we have a couple of combos and some individual rods and reels or look in Haddrell’s MP…in WA ask for John C.:wink:

I have 2 Lamson Reels and have had prob.s w/ both. The screws (too small) that hold the reel to the reel seat kept coming loose after each fish on the Litespeed 4. also the clutch went bad after 6 months of hard fishin on the Velocity 3.5. Lamson, however, was on top of it and had a new clutch and screws (w/ Loctite) overnighted to me. loctite fixed the prob. great and i put it on all my reel seat screws.
