Recommendations for Charleston area? Looking to get into spearfishing this summer and trying to get certified while home from school in the next 3-4 weeks if lessons are being offered. I see lowcountry scuba and also charleston scuba…any suggestions? Thanks
Lowcountry Scuba on Shem creek. Vic is a spearfisherman and supports the other guys that do. Better prices too.

Charleston Scuba has a bad reputation amongst several fishermen. I’ve hear rumors of their captain trying to “chase off” fishermen that were anchored up on top of a wreck that they wanted to dive…
That being said, if you want to work with a dive shop that respects both fishermen and divers, then Lowcountry Scuba as Rob said…
I’d love to learn to dive also. What would y’all say is a ballpark price for someone to get started?

You should have a good wad of cash to start because it gets very addictive and it is a very gear heavy sport. You will also want to go straight from your basic open water (60’) to your advanced open water cert (130’) since all diving here is generally beyond 60’.
That being said, don’t bother. Diving isn’t any fun. Nothing to see here… Move along.
Jordan, do you dive or just a bad experience? We used to kill sheepshead at the jeddys in dungarees and tennis shoes with masks and cheap spear guns.
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
I do believe Jordan is trying to keep us away…LOL

Jordan is right… Do you really want to pay all of that money only to get eaten by Mary Lee or Genie? It’s only a matter of time before this new influx of GW sharks claims it’s first scooby snack in the form of a diver.

That’s why you always dive with a buddy. It instantly cuts your chances of getting eaten in half.

International Dive Institute does a great job and is a better deal. They teach commercial diving so they really know their stuff.
edited to add: Also taking an advanced course might teach you a few skills but in no way does that make you an advanced diver, only lots of time in the water does that.
Low Country Scuba
Mainly for the reasons Rob mentioned above.
Do all your course work online and then all you have to do is schedule one weekend for check-outs.
now thats scary RDW, instant diver! we have taken a lot of EXPERIENCED divers out and they can’t get to the bottom here in Chas.
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
Who said anything about instant?
PADI offers the normal “classroom” material to be covered online.
Content reviews and chapter tests are completed before moving on to the next subject material. Overall test is administered at end of online class, just like sitting in a class room.
Instructor does open water skills with you and also administers a “final” written exam.
I did mine this way through Low Country Scuba and believe me, it isn’t instant nor is it a piece of cake.
For me it was the only way to get certified since I work a full-time job plus have other responsibilities that prevent me from commiting to a class schedule.

True! I know of at least one “dive master” around here that doesn’t know up from down. It’s usually the guys with the most certifications that get in trouble. Experience is the best certification. With that said, the philosophical classroom hoo-ha is necessary.

I was wondering about one weekend of check outs, sounds like a qualified diver to me!

You’re right about “experienced” and “qualified”.
Everyone has to start some where and getting certified is the first step, that was what the original poster was asking about anyway.
Get certified (even if it only takes one weekend of checkouts ) and hopefully an experienced diver will take this young man under his wing and help him get some experience and teach him how to be safe.
Certification is for sissies…
