looking to get a kayak, any recommendations???

So i’m looking into getting my first fishing kayak and was looking for any things i should be looking for as far as size and features and models. I’m 5’10" and about 170lbs if that helps out at all, experienced angler but only been out paddling a handful of times. thanks for the help

Rent a few first and go with the one that feels the most comfortable for the type of fishing you do?

If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

Try out one of the Wilderness System Rides, 115 or 135.

Thanks, I’ll give some of the company’s up here in myrtle a call and see what I can go try out.

Call the Sail and Ski Connection up on 501 (843 626 7245), they can set you up with most Hobie and Wilderness Systems rentals.

Test out several models before you make your choice. I know that I am biased but check out the Mirage Drive system from Hobie. There is something to be said when you do not have to put the rod down to make adjustments.

I can’t imagine going back to a nonpeddle drive kayak. I really enjoy my pro angler. Native’s mariner looks good, but never been in one. good luck.

I might be selling my Ride 135 here really soon for a good price

Let me know, if you decide to sell it.

I have a 12 foot freedom hawk kayak for sale. Sweet little boat. Perfect for fly fishing and stuff. Reason for selling is a got a boat and havent really had a chance to get out on the yak. Private message me or just right back on here if you would like to try it out one day.

lost@sea is being humble with the benefits of the peddle drive. We had a group out for the meet and fish and I got to paddle a long way next to him, as he fished the entire stretch that we were all busy with paddles in the water. Same on the way out, we were paddling and the 2 guys with the Hobie were fishing. It’s not a cheap system, but you literally get to fish the entire day. Worth considering.

Many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

Been selling my Kayaks and down to just three if interested let me know. Might keep one, but just not sure if price is right will get rid of all of them. PM if interested.

Try to get a boat that floats. LOL

Seriously, try out as many as possible. I love my hobie adventure with the mirage drive. Much easier than paddling traditionally. But it’s also tippy compared to a hobie pro which is literally a barge boat, huge you can get up and walk around. I on the other hand have gotten used to the adventure, and been out in the ocean with it. Looking to install amas next for my sail to fish out a bit further. With the amas installed, in the spring I plan on trying the charleston near shore reef, 2.5 nautical miles from the jetties. Now that’s an adventure.

Hey you guys with kayaks for sale, I will probably buy one this week. I will look at the Malibu from Dave this week as well. If you guys want to pm with pictures, I would appreciate the chance to look at them. There is a Ride 135 for sale on CL, but it is really beat on, so I want something in pretty good shape, and definitely a fishing setup.

Try out a tarpon or redfish. Check with Dave and see if he has one to demo. Maybe we can hit Folly or Sullivans next weekend and test it out.
