Hi Guys,
I’m new to this forum, but have done some kayak fishing this summer. I am about to purchase a ws tarpon 120 I’ve had on lay-away at time out sports in mt. pleasant. I just wanted to know if anyone would like to hook up for some fishing. Cut mullet, I see you go out a lot and I would love to tag along sometime. My days off are usually during the week(mon., tues, etc.). Anyway, I hope to get to know some yak fishermen,and would feel safer on the water with some friends.Thanks, carolina red <{{>{
I am looking at the Tarpon 12 too. If you don’t mind, about how much did it run you?
Dawg,
I think the 12 is $700-, the 14 is $750-, but I’ve been making payments all summer so I might be a bit off. I paddled many boats at the kayak festival earlier this summer and was most impressed with the tarpon 140, however my wife and I are relocating to inland Virginia so I think the 12 will have more fresh H2O applications. Hope this helps. I’m headed to work but if I can help any further I’ll check in tonight,<{{>{
Sounds good, how about next week? I will be fishing most days if the weather is decent.
Picked up a 19" flounder and 15" trout today in a few hrs along with some undersize ones. Trout on the elec. chicken and flounder on minnows.
Nice catch CMullet! Thanks a lot for rubbing it in! When I finally get a yak I am right there with ya’ll. Good Luck if you guys are going out this weekend. I hope to be down there soon!
Hey CR, got a tarpon 140 last Dec fm the same place. I like having the length when hitting open water, but was thinking down the road to save up a get a shorter yak for the inland rivers. I might venture out Sat. a.m. if I get up in time. Long day. I have lost several large reds due to angle of my line and the oyster beds. Had to shift to my surf rod to get a higher angle. In the mean time, if you see a blue ice 140 and a guy using a surf rod, paddle on over. Good luck. tf
You guys help me out, I am debating between the 120 and the 140. I am going to use it for 85% inland Saltwater fishing in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Gulf Coast, FL. The other 15% will be lakes, rivers, etc. Which yak will be the best fit for me? Any help would be apprieciated! Hope you guys have a great time fishing this weekend!
Dawg,
For inland salt H2O, the 140 has a slight addvantage when it comes to speed and tracking, however the 120 is rock solid stable and all you lose is 2 feet. For my needs the 120 is a bit more manuverable, and I am hoping to float some rivers in VA, where I think the 140 would be to long and combersome. Also I have had a harder time loading the 140 onto my car in windy conditions. If you are going to cover substantial distances, the 140 would give you an easier cruising speed. Hope this helps some --If you have specific concerns let me know if I can help. Also the very best way to know which boat is for you is to paddle both. the diffences between the two are slight and they are both wonderfully made kayaks-- I’m sure it’s a win win situation,good luck, Carolina red<{{>{
Cut Mullet,
I’m going to get my kayak either sun, or mon. And my wife has given me a kitchen pass for wed. There will be some work installing some rod holders, but Hopefully wed. will be a go. If you would like to hook up early wed. morning let me know. thank, cr <{{>{
Bought an Ocean Kayak prowler 13 about 3 wks ago…finally got it rigged for fishing. Would welcome some company to try it out.
pads,
congratulations! I paddled one at the festival–nice ride!! I am looking to go salt water on wed. would love to get a group of yak fishermen together. unfortunately my days off are usually mid week. but anyway happy paddling <{{>{
I have a 12’9" boat and a 140 pungo. The pungo has a rudder type stern, the other upswept. In the wind the pungo is a pain to swing with the wind blowing hard, the other much easier. If you are not worried about space for the cooler, baitbucket, ect…ie. sit-on-top, I would get the shorter boat just for manuverabilty in the creeks and wind. I use both.
carolina red: Cool, Wednesday is good. Meet ya at Bushypark? 1/2 hr. before sun-up? lowtide is 10am, and the water shouldn’t be moving very fast. If ya don’t get your boat, you can use one of mine. Oh, I almost forgot… think w/out alcohol before you drill/cut holes in you boat, it’s kinda like a tatoo:wink:
cut mullet,
Weds. sounds great. I’ve done most of my yak-fishing closer to the ocean, so I would love to try some spots in bushy park area. Thanks for the invite. if you want to e-mail me with a phone number, we could make better plans and I should know by monday if I get my boat or possibly a loaner till they get a red one in, or if I need to borrow yours. At any rate thanks again and hopefully we can touch base soon. If I don’t hear anything else I’ll plan on bushy park .5 before sunrise[ <{{>{
Thanks for the info guys, looks like I am leaning to to the 120, but will road test both before I make the final decision. Be sure to give me a full report when you guys get back. Tight lines!

Hey Dawgcatcher, I think you will be pleased with that 120. I got out Sat morning and paddled until my 140 sat in the mud. I was able to catch a nice 22" red with live finger mullet. So much fun learning this whole kayak fishing thing. Hope my wife stays patient. I still need to mount rod holders and get a small anchor. Was thinking about a 1.5 lb folding anchor and 2 ram tubes for behind the seat. Have a good one. v/r tf
Nice Catch TX!
Want to get together…Make sure you are free on the 4th of November, and come on down to Hunting Island State Park outside of Beaufort. Kayak fishermen from all over the state are planning on converging and fishing.
The Tarpon 140 is a nice yak. It all depends on how far from the launch site you will be fishing. If more than a couple of miles, you will appreciate the 140, if a chop or wind, even mjore so. I know I love my 160 just for these reasons.

Those who can’t fish, spend too much!
Cutmullet, what river do you fish in? I haven’t had much luck with the kayak latley and would like to know where a good place is to fish. You don’t have to tell me exactley where but just what river. thanks.
I usually fish the upper cooper. If the weather is iffy, I stay close to Bushy park landing… That left bank leaving the landing holds some fish.
Picked up 5 spottails today, all around 15", 2 nice keeper trout right in front of the boat ramps and missed 3-5 flounder real close. A bit chilly this morning, time to break out the stocking hat and gloves.
