I am looking for a new 8wt for redfish and would like some opinions on the G. Loomis GLX CrossCurrent. I have casted a 10 and 12 wt standard Crosscurrent, but have yet to cast a GLX. I know it has a lot of backbone for wind and long casts, but would like some first hand input on the rods short and midrange action/feel for those close-in reds. I had a Sage RPLXi 8wt and its action was a bit too slow for my stroke. Thanks for the help.
I have the GL3 and my buddy just got an X. He was nice enough to let me test it out. I was shocked in the difference between the GL3 and the Crosscurrent GLX. The GLX is as you describe. Stiff backbone but, still seems to have a responsive tip. I gave up on false casts. You just pick up the line and put it where you want it. The casts are effortless. For close in work I just work with a roll cast.
Both these rods are 9wt. The 9wt is a very popular saltwater rod for reds but, I think the 8wt is a lot better suited for most of the red fishing around here. Especially if you go with the X. It will have plenty of stopping power. Nowadays, I am very happy with a 7wt and keep the 9wt at the ready.
I have a 10 wt. GLX CC and like it but haven’t cast a 10 wt. plain CC to compare it to. But having GLX rods in other sizes I think you would like it, they are very responsive and retain a quick sensitive tip action because of the high modulus graphite I assume. Compared to my 10 wt. Sage TCR, the TCR feels a little faster and lighter. If you are at a shop trying them out, try a Sage TCX also, my 7 wt. is sweet, I bet the 8 wt. would be too.

The GLX 8wt is my go-to rod. I’ve been fishing it for about 3 years now in every situation you can imagine, both here and in the bahamas. When lined properly it can work in tight or be deadly accurate at distance. It was rated best saltwater 8wt by just about every major mag/website for like 4 years running… its sick. I say go for it, you will love it. I would offer you to buy mine, but the undertaker is gonna have to pry it out of my cold dead hands when I leave this world.

I have the Loomis GLX CC in a 7wt & LOVE it. I have a Sage Xi2 8wt, and will pass it by just about every time to get the Loomis. Just my 2 cents, but it sure is a nice stick. Light, casts with very little effort, and you can easily cast off the tip for close in shots, or go long with a decent haul. Really a nice rod, just a bit pricey.
