Loop Knots...and a fat trout

Anybody have a favorite?
Also wondering if anyone uses the Canoe Man’s knot? Fairly easy to tie, but im a little suspicious of the strength- it’s sort of a peculiar knot.

surgeon’s end loop for me

the first one i found on my first google search has worked fine for me- pretty quick, it’s basically a clinch tightened on an overhand instead. big help when you want to use stiff leader but need free action at the eye- it worked on 4 trout this morning with a spook jr.

I use the same as above. I think it’s called a Lefty Loop, named after Lefty Kreh. Sometimes a Surgeons loop for double line to leader, but usually the above knot to a jig head or live bait.

FYI, Pro-Knot has an app for rope and fishing knots. Great instructional pictures in the app just like they have on-line. Convenient to have when you want to tie something you don’t use frequently!

Ive been using this doa “canoeman” loop knot

really easy and fast

I use the Lefty loop or the Rapala knot ,no worries.

The Canoeman’s Knot is a mirror imaged Bowline. Trying tying a Canoeman’s knot and a Bowline knot with some paracord side by side to see what I mean.

The Canoeman’s knot is stronger than the Bowline because the knot loops gets loaded a little differently. It’s a decent knot for braids and heavy mono but I wouldn’t trust it for mono 20lbs and lighter.

The surgeon’s loop knot is decent for lighter mono and braid. On mono, it’s about in between the strength of a palomar and a well tied improved clinch knot. And that’s about as good as loop knots get in mono in my experience.

The big guy

thanks for all the info guys- really appreciate the input.

went out this morning to try a little topwater… was using the canoe man’s loop knot for the first time. I’m still thanking my lucky stars that it held. my biggest trout ever.

i do sincerely apologize for the crop- i was fishing with a buddy at one of his favorite spots…it’s not really mine to share.

Nice trout.

I honestly find no need whatsoever for a loop knot on topwater plugs. Mono or Braid I’ll use a palomar knot on topwater lures and most everything else. Loop knots are very rarely necessary.

The big guy

looks like the knot and the trebles did their jobs- VERY nice fish!

Beauty trout, 22 or 23?

I use the non-slip loop knot shown above. its easy to tie because its basically a clinch knot tied around an overhand loop. Never had a problem with it. the only issue is that its not too straight of a knot but its never caused me problems with a topwater plug.

She was just under 27 inches…didnt weigh her. I know it’s a little unusual to catch trout this size around here, and not that i expected this to be anywhere near record-setting, it did pique my curiosity enough that i looked up the state record- 11 pounds, 13 ounces (no length given). WOW!! I doubt this fish weighed 1/2 of that.

That’s a massive trout. Congrats

Wishin I was fishin.

that’s a great trout. Congratulations

Nice…the last 27" inch trout I saw weighed just over 7lbs…
