Loose Deck Plate Screws

I noticed last weekend that the screws holding the round deck plates on the floor of my 2001 Sea Pro were loose. When I got back home, I tried to tighten them down but all of the screws were put in at the edge of the hole in the deck. In other words, it’s like the acess holes they cut at the factory were too big and the screws basically were just tightened down on the edge of the hole. Please, does anyone know how I could fix this ? Would a slightly larger deck plate work ? Any help or info is much appreciated.

If there are no clearance issues, I don’t see why a bigger deck plate wouldn’t work. Maybe even go with a rectangular one with the hatch type opening if you want to.

See if you can get nuts/washers to pinch it in there, not sure if it’d work or not. If they’ve been there on until now on a 2001, you should be good to go if you can get it to pinch.

Of course, who am I to talk, I’ve got missing screws all over my Sea Hunt, and in places I wouldn’t think were under any stress at all.

Are they stripped out? On my boat I take toothpicks and break them into small pieces and place 2 or 3 in the hole and then the screw has something to “bite” to.

Use urithane calk and glue them in! tape all places not wanted to hold glue. will hold forever! Just besure all parts are clean.

Thanks Gentlemen. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Put a little 3M 4200 in the holes. Do not use 5200 if you ever want to take the screws out again! 4200 should lock them in just fine and you can still back them out!

Thanks Mr. Easy,
That stuff looks like it will do the trick. I appreciate it.

Jack, they sell that stuff in smaller tubes so you don’t waste as much also. I use it for loose screws and such! West Marine should have tons of it!

If you need to add more fiberglass for the screws to bite into you may be able to use som JB Weld epoxy. It’s less than $6 at Lowe’s (same isle as the caulking material).

You could make two half moon washers out of stop sign aluminum and 5200 them down there, predrill and she would be super strong. a great material to work with and no rot. This material jigsaws real well and you can do anything with it.
