Loose Needle on Fuel Gauge...How to Fix?

The indicator needle will spin on my fuel gauge. I am thinking of filling tank to complete full and then trying to reset the needle. How can I then reattach it so it will not spin on its spindle? I don’t want to accidentally stick it down permantly. I’ll replace the gauge if necessary, hoping it won’t come to that.

This is a simple magnetic spinner type gauge. It turned out that all I had to do was clean out the socket that the guage spun in; it was crudded up with salt sludge. Thanks, Bill, for the suggestion.
