Shot a buck at 2 PM after being in stand one minute. Could not find blood. went back next AM and found blood tracked for 2.5 hours and 200 yards. Called Salty849. Great guy. He came with his dog. We found where deer had laid down and more blood coming out and then it ended in the swamp and we gave up after total of 4.5 hours.
Thanks Salty for trying to help this old sh…it that needs to practice staying calm while shooting. It is nice to know that there is always someone willing to help you. Have a Merry Christmas.
Was you shakin?
BOB
No. He was about to disappear into the woods and I snapped off the shot, probably jerking it.
Did not focus on placement.

Stuff happens. If you’ve never lost a wounded deer, you just never hunted much. Make every effort to recover it, sounds like you did that, and after that, it’s time to move on. Nothing goes to waste. If it doesn’t feed you, it will feed many other critters, which is it’s ultimate destiny anyway

most don’t like to state that, but… it is so true. My worst was a gut shot 15 point found a week later.
Merry Christmas to you as well.
The doe I took last week had been shot in her leg earlier this season.
i hate that gut wrenching feeling where after an hours long search the deer was never found…i got reminded of it this year too. one of the guys on my boat has a few acres and for letting me hunt his land im teaching HIM how to hunt too. he doesnt have any hunting gear so i gave him a spare set of my camo and my 12 gauge slug gun for the season. scouted around and set up the ladder stand he bought and i get a text early one morn saying he shot at a doe and missed with no sign of a hit. i went out there myself to double check him since hes never tracked before and i found a few trickles of blood. i start teaching him the art of tracking and once he knew what to look for he did a great job and when the trail got light even found a few spots before i did. trail ran dry and i circled the area by the book and found no more blood or downed deer. one of his other friends came out after me and helped for an hour but found no more blood or downed deer. he said he was steady and had the red dot right behind the shoulder but nothing to show for it. i did all that i could but still felt horrible for the guy not recovering what should have been his first deer!
