Most of the Orvis stuff seems to have good quality and value at the various price points they cover. There also seems to be more lower and midlevel equipment usage out there than some of the big boys would like to acknowledge. From the posts I’ve seen so far, I guess you could draw a couple of conclusion about fly fishing in the low country. First and foremost, you don’t have to drop a grand or more on a saltwater fly rod and reel to enjoy the inshore and nearshore fly fisheries. Second, as long as you have a decent reel with good drag and a stick that’s in the 9 foot range capable of handling a floating weight forward or floating sinking tip 7, 8 or 9 weight line you can pretty much cover most any of the standard low country red fish presentation. As with any fishery, I’m sure there are times when many of you would like a little more or a little less stick depending on the wind or the mood & size of the fish but when it’s all said and done, it’s as much about getting out there, finding the fish then putting the bait in front of them in a way so they want to eat that seals the deal and keep us all coming back. The reel, line, rod and even the flies are nothing more than tools to help us get the job done a litte more effieicently. For those of you that have found otherwise or have that knock your socks off set up or presentation that get’s it done better than the rest of poor over worked, under paid and highly stressed out fishing bumbs, I’d be interested in hearing your views. As someone that’s interested in the longterm viability and sustainability of many east coast fisheries, I’d like to give a big “That A Boy” to those local shops, clubs, guides and anglers who keep promoting the sport and encouraging new blood and good stewardship of our natural resources.

I use a sage 11wt rod and a tibor reel. I don’t like to think i’m undergunned. Plus the extra backbone is nice to pull big fish away from docks and beds.
