Lowcountry question

Hello all,
I am new new to the forum and kayak fishing the lowcountry. (I used to fish in the lakes upstate) I wanted to say hello and see if anyone could offer some tips about salt water fishing in these colder months and possibly a suggestion of some areas to try (not asking for anyone’s “secret” spot) also I have a SMALL. fear of large gators, I have been avoiding places like GC reservoir and bushy park. I am planning on going out this Sunday and Monday.

Thank you in advance, any information is greatly appreciated!
Shaun

Welcome! The inshore fishing is hot right now…as the weather starts turning colder and the bait starts heading out, the fishing will be awesome b/c the fish are bulking up for winter - so you can fish cut bait, live, or artificials with a lot of success.

There is a lot of good fishing available from most public ramps around town. Of course, there are a few that are a little more kayak friendly, like Paradise Landing. My best advice would be to simply read through the pages of the forum and you’ll get a general idea of where to fish around town…stick to places with a lot of structure and you’ll find fish eventually.

Elgeebee is spot on. I just started kayak fishing in April and I’ve learned a lot just by being on the water. Don’t give up on a spot just because you didn’t catch fish there once. You can apply many of your bass fishing techniques to salt water fishing. I like to use plastics like gulp, vudu shrimp, DOA, Zman, etc. I like to keep one rod set up with a carolina rig, one with a popping bobber, and 2 or 3 with artificials. Playing around with the famous trout trick can be productive as well. Live bait is usually productive and easy to use. I like to have mudd minnows and live shrimp. Catching mulllet with a cast net is easy right now and they can land you some big fish. For what its worth, I don’t like being close to gators either but I’ve been out to GCR a few times and the gators never bothered me. I’ve seen some over 10 feet and they just leave when I come around. If you’re new to kayak fishing I recommend taking it easy at first and fishing with only one or 2 poles. Take minimal tackle until you get comfortable on the water. Remember to time your tides so you’re not paddling against the tide and learn your limitations. Check out the app called launch sites. It has some good locations around here. I’m still new around here but if you have any questions you can pm me and I’ll help you out if I can.

I just started yak fishing last spring as well and its just about all I think about now. Just got out to paradise landing for the first time this week. Fishing was HOT. I highly recommend it.
