Lower Saluda - stripers or trout?

Hello -

My son and I are going to be fishing the Lower Saluda on Sunday morning and I’ve been trying to decide if we should still target trout or if we should switch to targeting stripers. I know that April is normally the time of year that the stripers migrate up the Congaree and enter the Broad and Saluda. I haven’t been able to locate any recent fishing reports to give me an indication of how the migration is progressing. Any advice? For trout, we usually drop our kayaks in at Saluda Shoals Park. I’ve got another spot further down river that seems to attract the stripers once they are in town.
Thanks.

I haven’t put my kayak in down there yet this year, but I would think its a little early for stripers in the Saluda right now. They have been running alot of water lately, so you never know, but I would think the trout would be more of a sure thing.

a little early for the saluda stripers, they started spawning sunday 4/7 in the congree, so a few more weeks and it will be on!!

TEAM LAID BACK

Thanks guys - that’s exactly the type of intel I was looking for. My son really wants to try and catch one of the DNR’s tagged trout, so we will focus on them.
Thanks again & tight lines.

Just a follow up post. We hit the Lower Saluda this morning and the trout were very cooperative. Five landed for me and three for my son. We both lost a few too. All fish were caught on Copper John flies. No tagged trout this trip but there were a lot of non-tagged fish in the area.

Probably the last trout trip for us before the stripers show up - but that is a blast too and we’re really looking forward to it.

Sounds like yall had a nice day!
