Lower unit cannot line up splines to go back on

Got a Yamaha 40 '03. After water pump change I cannot get the unit to line up in the drive shaft splines.

I took the unit off in reverse. I have now moved the control to forward position I seem to get more play in the splines but it just won’t line up in forward. Does my control box have to be in reverse when I put it the unit back on? I’m worried I will have shifting problems on it goes back on in a different gear?

Shift the foot into forward with the foot shift rod and retry. Take the plugs out so you can rotate flywheel or jiggle the prop to line up drive shaft splines. The shifter must be in the position of forward if the foot is in forward. The foot shift rod only turns about a 150-180 degrees…you’ll feel the prop unlock when in neutral.

What’s the foot shift rod?

The front rod with the splines on it at the front top of the foot. Put a small socket on top and turn it slowly till the foot shifts to neutral...and download a repair manual...cheap and saves time.

Like mdaddy said that’s the rod that manually/mecanically shifts your foot from forward to reverse. Both it and your drive shaft that goes into your engine have to line up.

Like mdaddy said you can pull plugs and rotate engine, but I like to leave the foot in gear and rotate the prop to spin shaft to align. Also make sure your exhaust tube is going in place and not holding you off. I also like to give the shaft splines a good coat of heavy grease. No lithium, a good NlGI #2 molly grease. I like the Lucas Marine grease. http://lucasoil.com/products/grease/marine-grease
