Lower Unit Leak

Well, I fixed the water pump on my '94 25 Rude, but now there seems to be a slight leak in the lower unit of what I am assuming is gear lube.

It appears to be leaking from where the prop body meets the motor body. It is dripping down the skeg and onto the ground. Are there any seals or o-rings there that could have corroded or blown?

is it black and slimy
or milky looking?

pull your lower drain plug to get a sample of your gear oil quality, you dont need to leave it open long. All contaminents will settle at the bottom. Typically if it leaks out it will leak in as well. Like Chris was asking if it is milky it is emulsified oil(water intrusion). You need to have it pressure tested and resealed.

I checked it this morning, it is black, and still slimy.

Check your lower unit plug screws. I had this happen before due to a cross-threaded plug after servicing.

Unburnt fuel/oil mixture. Thats all.

if its black, its not likely to be gear oil
its unburnt fuel mixing with carbon build up

Any reprecutions of running a motor with fresh gas/oil mixture?

Yeah, it will run better than with old crappy gas/oil.

Just kidding… I don’t understand your question. Can you rephrase?

Sorry, shouldn’t have had the fiance type my response apparently…

What was meant to be said: would it be ok to run the motor with some fresh gas? as in, what is causing the unburnt fuel/ carbon build to leak out by the prop?

  1. Improper fuel oil mixture
  2. Carburator improperly adjusted - too rich
  3. bad reed valve
  4. engine not up to operating temp for whatever reason.

do a carbon treatment
then run with fresh fuel
