I’ve got two Yamaha 60hp motors. Both have a little oxidation/corrosion around the point where the foot meets the mid section. I assume it is from mechanical wear at that location from impeller changes that then leads to saltwater corrosion. There’s also a little around the water intake on one of the motors. My question is this - should I brush/sand these down and touchup repaint them? If I do will it look patchy with the Yamaha paint available at the local marine store? Should I spray paint or brush paint (I think both are available)? Is this even necessary as it seems to have taken several years for only a little corrosion? I’d like to keep them in good running condition so I’d be willing to put some elbow grease into it if it is worth it. Thanks.
Here’s a pic of the less affected motor:

If you think that looks bad you should see what’s on the inside! [:0]
But seriously, it doesn’t look like it will cause any problems. If it were me I’d hit it every so often with some CRC6-56 and let it ride. Also spray down the whole powerhead to keep things nice and loose and stop any corrosion/oxidation under the cowling.
Sanding and repainting is up to you but I personally wouldn’t sweat it until it looked a lot worse than that.
It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!
Go ahead and remove the lower gear case and lightly sand and repaint with a light coat of zinc phosphate primer first. Will yo be able to see the repair, a little, but corrosion only gets worse once it has begun. When you reassemble, put a light coat of marine grease on the mating flanges.
