Some of the paint has rubbed off my lower unit and is starting to form white powdery oxidation. Was wondering if anyone has ever used the Moeller paints with any success? I read that the best option is to sand, coat with zinc primer, then 545 epoxy primer, then use awlgrip paint. It is only a 25hp yammy, so don’t need a ton of paint. I am unable to find small amounts of all of the above, just don’t want to spend all that money and never use it all. Thanks.
the moeller paint will work fine for a while, just make sure you put clear coat over it when done.
is it as good as the awlgrip? not even close, but its way cheaper and easier, and its much better than raw aluminum
Thanks, Chris! Do you know where you can purchase awlgrip and the primers?
You can get Awlgrip from westmarine. It’s gonna cost you an arm and a leg. Awlgrip is not recommended for below the water line. It is the hardest marine paint made but will not stand a chance against oysters or sand. Go with the moeller and touch up as needed. Just my .02

Does Yamaha make cans of spray paint for their motors? I have used Evinrude spray paint on my old Evinrude motors. Just pull the prop, wrap the shaft, sand the foot, wipe down with acetone to remove remaining grease, and spray several light coats to avoid runs. Quick and easy. Just do this every year when you pull the foot to replace the water pump impeller. You need to pull the prop every year anyway.
