Lowrance HDS 7 Help!

So just installed a brand new HDS 7. The sonar looks awesome, the maps look great and the screen resolution is fantastic.

Only problem is that i cant get the gps to find where i am. So an alarm goes off every 30 seconds and flashes that it cant locate current position.

The unit is located under a ttop and i am just using the internal antenna. I was told by a couple people that the internal antenna should be enough. Its not a hard top ttop.

You guys have any ideas here? I am gonna call lowrance in the morning to see if they have any advice. I am hoping its an easy fix and i dont have to send it in to the black hole known as lowrance customer service.

im begining to feel like i should have gone the easy garmin route…:face_with_head_bandage:

Where is the boat loacated? Is it under a shed? Can it see the sky? I know the soft top is in the way but that should not affect anything but heavy trees and a shed will.

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

The boat is sitting in the water at the marina.

Does the HD unit have a terminating resister on the external antenna circuit?

They are sold without external antennas now. The internal antennas are very strong on the HDS units. Mine found its position in under 30 seconds the very first time I cut it on out of the box.

Mrmullen, is your unit flush mounted or binacle mounted? Mine works fine right beneath a glass and aluminum framed windshield and soft top, but I’ve heard some other people saying they needed an external antenna when flush mounting. On the other hand, I’ve also heard many people, including one of the biggest HDS dealers on our coast, saying the internal antenna on these units is strong enough to work even when flush mounted.

I just installed a HDS 10 and it found me almost instantly. Maybe there’s a setting that switches from internal to external antennae. That could cause a problem.

there ain’t no shame in passin’ the rod
