Looking at buying the lowrance hook 2 ff/gps ($119.00)for my hobie kayak and was wondering if you could power it with a battery from a battery operated drill. Any thoughts on this or maybe what is the smallest battery one could use.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Use 12vdc battery, not an 18vdc. Over voltage may damage the unit where as low voltage just wont let it operate. Probably won’t last all day but I’m not certain on that as I don’t know what the amp draw is on the hook2 or what the mAh (milliampere hour) is on the batt. Try it in your living room and see before you try it in the field. Maybe use some small alligator clips on the wires so you can bring more that one batt and swap as needed. Be careful connecting to the batt as well because the pos. and neg. terminals are very close to each other and it wouldn’t take much to short out the unit. Good luck and keep us posted.

I’ve been using an old 12v drill battery just fine, too weak for the drill but runs the DF. Used to use a gel cell from Batteries+ but the drill battery works for now. Don’t know how long it last but covers the few ours I go out each time…
Gotta friend that uses a mo-ped battery to power his h-bird on a kayak, not physically much larger than a drill batt.and will power it all day , recharges it with a maintainer

Thank you to the three of you who responded. I thought I saw where this was done and just wasn’t sure about it. I’m still learning to fish all over again and continue to learn from these forums so again thank you.
