LP Gas Tanks

Maybe everyone knew this but me. I took two empty LP gas tanks to Bi-Lo today and did the “Blue Rhino tank exchange”. As I was taking the tanks out of my truck this afternoon, I saw the tanks were labelled “15 Lbs. Net Weight”. I thought about this for a minute and said, these have always been 20 lb. tanks, what is with the “15 Lbs. Net Weight”? Then I saw this little (2"X1.5")IMPORTANT CUSTOMER NOTICE, taped to the side of the tank, that in essence said, there is a class action lawsuit against Blue Rhino, and others, saying they reduced the amount of propane gas in the cylinders it sold to its customers without disclosing the reduced fill to its customers.

Although you get a nice clean, recently pressure tested LP tank, it is only 3/4 full, for about the same price ($18 on sale) as having 20 lbs. of propane put in a tank you are re-filling.

Just a heads up if you use a lot of propane like I do!

I didn’t know that, thanks for the heads up. What a scam. Same thing they do with food. What used to be 16 oz is still in the same size container, but it now is 13.6oz. Most wont ever notice.

The exchange type propane companies very quietly went to 15 lbs over the past couple of years. Now I have my tanks (including empty Blue Rhino) filled at Lake Murray Hardware in Ballentine. They’ll fill it full for less than the cost of a 15 lb exchange. I can’t recall the exact price but I think I paid about $16.00 the last time I filled one.

Eat more fish, less meat… Not near as much propane used.[:I]
