Lucky KUT Bait on 5-17-12 (Pix)

Put in around 10:00am on 5-17 for the Low Tide with a buddy and his girlfriend. Headed to the honey hole and within 15 minutes we had landed 2 slot reds and a small bluefish. I was pissed though because I watched a guy put two very small black drum in his cooler on a private dock which I know he did not own, and they were not legal. Said something to him, but he kinda blew it off. I know they were not legal because he was within 10 yards of us.

Headed to another spot, had a boat there, and I don’t fish on top of other people like they do to me, so we moved on. Went to catch some fresh bait and live shrimp, and we got plenty. Shrimp and Mullet everywhere. Also caught two small redfish in the cast net. Got the bait in the buckets and headed to another spot. Within muttes had a few bites but no takers. Next spot.

Tried another spot and finally BIG FISH ON! Hauled him in without really letting the fish fight, and as I tried to net him, he dove deep and the hook pulled. Very BIG Redfish. Estiamting 34" + no joke. Frustrated and upset, we got another one on, and I had some fun with it on my new favorite setup, Stradic FJ 3000 on the Greenwater. Man, it is so perfectly smooth. Amazing setup. Brought in a nice 27" redfish. As we were ready to leave another fish on, drag was loose, but within a few seconds, all my rig was gone! Line popped. 30lb BRAID! WTF!?

Moved on to another spot, a new spot for us, and within 2 minutes a real fighter! Another 27’ redfish. Lucky, got the bait back, reset it on the hook, put it back out and within another 2 mintues, BAM, fish on! 28" redfish. Got the bait back again! Reset the same bait, within another 2 mintues BAM! Fish on again! 28" redfish! Same bait, 3 fish, all within 10 minutes maybe! Awesome day now! Called it a few mintes after that to end the day with 6 Redfish landed, 4 over slot, 2 in the slot, 1 blue fish, 1 mud/toadfish, and one pig red lost at the boat. Great day with good people.

Bait was dead Cut Mullet, Live Finger Mullet, and Live Shrimp. Hot Bait was KUT

great report!!..makes me want to get out there. Soon as house guests leave

Kut - Check the DNR site. They have a number to call to report folks taking illegal fish. Nice report and way to put your guests on the fish.

Is that a 15 whaler? if so how do you like fishing on it without a livewell and only 2 rod holders?

Yeah, you can tear some redfish up with a cast net if you know what you’re doing.

what river?

It’s a 17’ Montauk Boston Whaler. It has 3 rod holders, two on one rail, (right hand side) and one on the other. We also added three rod holders to the console, which can clearly be seen in this picture thaat was above.

I love it. It’s a great boat, and with a few mods it is now even better. You don’t need a fancy boat, livewells, and rod holders to catch fish. The guy I was fishing with this day have fished before in a 15’ aluminum john boat with NO rod holders at all, and caught fish all day long.

We put bait in bait buckets and just keep them alive that way. We make it work.

I’ll fish out of a innertube if I had to.

Good post. Good pics. Good job.

great fishing right there! I fish out of a 15’ jon boat most of the time, no rod holders and just an anchor, and I catch plenty of fish right next the guys with $50,000 inshore CC’s. not like anyone would turn one of those down though :stuck_out_tongue:

haha I know the exact dock. if you see a big flats boat with a merc racing motor stop and say hey

Our “family boat” for a lot of years when I was growing up was a 14 ft aluminum jon boat with a 15hp Evinrude tiller. Period. We had a blast and always had fish in the freezer. We fished the river and the bays. It leaked pretty bad, but we’d pull the plug when we got on plane and let it drain out, then put the plug back in. We didn’t even have an aerator for our bait bucket. But we didn’t need one because it was a fancy bait bucket…had holes in it and it floated…galvanized too. Woohoo. One of our favorite things (I had 3 brothers) was when dad would let us jump out of the boat in the river while the boat was on plane. (For some reason, mom didn’t think that was too cool.)

It was a fun boat; I’d still like to have a 22ft Pathfinder though!

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
