Lure making

Who makes their own dolphin trolling lures? Is it hard? Save money doing it?

I used to make lots of mine. easy. I used everything from wild turkey feathers - strips cut from beer cans- strips cut from old shirts - and nylon fiber from old lawn chairs. Some of my best were retired neck ties in various colors I tied them to wood & lead with fishing line and super glue with a hole in the middle to run the wire thru with a 7/0 hook with a strip of bonito or aj. those ugly home made lures actually caught as many or more fish than the pretty store bought lures .

I’m giving it a try.

I came across this video of an Assie making what he called the $4 Slayer and it looked pretty simple.

So I got some film canisters - 24ct for I think $7.

I got some Jig Skins for around $14 or less.

Some stainless steel washers from the hardware store (forgot the cost)

Some skirts from Amazon at I think $2.00 each (I’m using 2 per lure)

Hooks, crimps, some plastic beads (slip stops) from Walmart (had these for years)

Some old refrigerator ice maker line that was taking up garage space and here is what I got:

I pulled one behind the boat and it made a decent splash and stayed on the surface but I have no idea if they’ll work. I’ve rigged them as pin rigs.

Now…if the wind will ever stop blowing we’ll try to find out!

Try sowing thread spools cut in half with beads in the center to reduce the hole. Most of the newer ones are made of styrofoam. I cover them with fish scale tape I order on line from up north.and use multi colered milar tinsel off the christmass tree.

I’m about to turn some stainless steel spoons into jigging spoons and trolling spoons. They should have a heck of a flutter action.

I’d rather fish than eat.

I have some friends who make trolling lures out of the little Tobasco Sauce bottles and the like. They said they worked for dolphin but then again, not much doesn’t.

When i settle back down in the USVI this fall, I want to get a lathe and turn some marlin lure heads out of hardwood. I have searched but haven’t found any info on people turning wooden trolling lure heads. They may not last as long as epoxy heads but they would be nifty to make.
