machine shop

Anyone know of a good machine shop that will take on little stuff. preferably JI/West Ashley.

Was replacing the water pump on my 25 Merc and one of the bolts that holds down the waterpump housing spun off. I drilled and tried to extract, but the extractor broke off in the hole. Need to see if a machine shop drill and tap it and or weld a bolt to the top of the old one and get the old bolt out.

The best part is I paid a shop 6 months ago to replace the water pump and they charged me for it. But based on how corroded the bolts were and having to heat and lube all the bolts to get them out, I have a feeling I got screwed by the shop…

When I get to that point, I usually take 1/8in burr bits and split the bolt in half. Then use a chisel and fold the two halves in then remove broken chunks. It’s very time consuming but 100% effective. When doing all those welding games, its a gamble if it works and when it doesn’t, you just heat treated the bolt and made it harder to drill.

If you want me to look at it, shoot me a pm. I could probably get it done at work over lunch.

MattR - thanks for the offer, i messed it up pretty good trying to get the broken ex-out, out. I ended up taking it to Simmons Machine and Balancing, they drilled and dropped a helicoil in it.

Next question is… i am going to replace the drive shaft seal as the old one is leaking, I pulled the seal and the could not really tell which side goes out. The side with the exposed spring or the other solid side. does anyone know. I looks to seal better with the spring exposed side facing down.

there should be 2 seals there
bottom spring down
top spring up
put the 2 flat surfaces together
