Mack Attack 6/30/07 - Shallow Sailfish Bite

My wife Robbie, buddie Doug, newbie Mark and I (left the dog home for a change) left @ 5:15 - lots of Governors Cup boats, but no other smaller boats heading out. 4.3’ on 5 second interval from the south slowed us down a bit, but we made good time. We decided to leave the deep water to the Competitors and dropped lines shallow at around 105’ @ 81deg @ a weed line looking for Dolphin and Sails.

Worked the weeds to no avail and trolled out … picking up a few dolphin in open water. The long line rod bent slightly @ 11am, and I dropped back to have the fish hit again and drop the bait. I dropped back again and and had a hookup, and set the hook solidly. The fish was swimming to us quickly, so I handed the rod to Doug, had Robbie accelerate the boat to help stay tight as I quickly began clearing lines on the left. My anticipation wasn’t wrong, as a beautiful sailfish leaped from the water about 150 yards back. Doug fought the Sail expertly, as we cleared lines, and I prepared to wire the fish. We brought the fish to the boat, and I leadered the Mack Attack’s 1st Sailfish. We took photos and I carefully revived the fish until he kicked hard and left my hands. Thsi was Doug’s 1st Sailfish and the 1st for the Mack Attack.

We had 4 or 5 other solid Sailfish soft bites (see the marks on the Ballyhoo’s tail), 1 short run, and 2 Sails sniffing our baits (no interest in a drop back) another time. We never went deeper than 130’ @ 82deg and also released 3 Barracuda.

I’ve been out 9 times this year (mostly other boats), and have hooked, caught and seen Sails on every trip. This is great for Charleston!

Had an easy ride home, entering Charleston Harbor at speed with the Gov Cup fleet and a cooler of 8 Dolphin and a Sailfish Flag up!

Congratulations Johnny and Bill for top local boat in the Hilton Gov Cup!

Most of our bites were on Green/Yellow - and our Sail release was on a giant Blue/White bait on the Shotgun.

You show really shave them and give the hair to the “locks of love” charity. I’m sure they could dye the hair…

Greg would disagree with your billfish handling techniques in that picture. According to some of the people on this site, you will be going to jail soon…DNR will be knocking on your door any time now. Good luck.
