My buddy Mel wanted to get his boat wet with some salt after recently repowering his Grady Gulfstream 23 with a single F300 (replaced 2 thirsty 150 rudes). Jazzed, Mel, another friend Kyle and I headed out toward the 226 hole in hopes of some wahoo, dolphin and possibly some tuna (like all that go offshore trolling for meat). It was a little bumpy on the way out, but the new Yammy purred nicely. We started around the ledge and had a decent bull on before we got the second line out. We never made it to the 226, we fished mainly between 250’ and 350’ with temps between 72.9 and 74.3. The cheap little pink bubbler we ran way back was the lure that brought in over half of our fish. We ended up bringing home 13 dolphin and a little tunny for another friend. We had a few more knock downs. Not a stellar day as far as total fish, but a great of fishing and telling lies! The only thing that went wrong all day was that a couple of miles from the jetties we lost steering due to a hydraulic line that burst. We had no Rescue tape to try to do a temporary fix, so I had the pleasure of standing on the bracket steering the boat all the way back to the Remely’s. After the 2 hour ride back in, I was a little wore out. My buddy doesn’t have a towing service for some reason. I called Capt. Steve from Boat US and he was kind as usual. He was going to send a boat to help us out, but I told him we(me) were going to try to steer it in. Capt. Steve called every little bit making sure we were ok and making it in. We could only run 5 to 8 mph. I have never had to use my membership yet(knock on wood), so I am not sure if it would have been a whole lot faster, but I am sure I wouldn’t have had the workout that I did.
Anyway, it was a good trip overall! The new motor out performed the old pair in power and fuel consumption, and we caught some fishies.
LYNN IS DA MAN! Seeing him steer that motor by hand for a couple of hours lets me know he is ready for a 1,000 pound fish! (Although I had the pleasure of seeing a 45lbs bull put a momentary hurtin on him last summer ; ) Lynn knows I dont get to go often, Mels hand was messed up, and this was Kyles first trip. These two buddies had us do all the crankin. Watching kyles first dolphin drain the green out of him was priceless. Great ride and fun catching. I could not ask for a better fishin buddy! Thanks again for taking me to play in Gods wetlands ; )

Good job on the fish Lynn. That sucks about the motor. We had the steering cable snap 22 miles out of Little River. Granted this was a 150 so much less muscle but still a pain. We ended up tying a lot of dock line to a gaff tied to a net and made a stick steer handle. held that down in between two rod holders on the back of the boat and came in at 25mph. Just used the GPS and somebody sitting on the front for watch on the way in. Good thing as stated before it waited til you were only 6 or 7 miles from Remleys.

Thank you, Sir!
I try to post all of the main details that I can remember from our trips. It may or may not help out someone. I guess that I should have also added to the report that we only found scattered weeds where we fished. With the wx that we have been having, it may be a little while before some real weed lines are found…
