Made it home from Y-73

We ran out to The Gardens on a flat and smooth ride and bailed a bunch of b-liners…figured we’d scoot over to Y-73 and hunt some black sea bass.

As soon as we got to some structure, my son dropped his line and hooked up with an amberjack. As I idled toward the line that was getting stripped, my overheat alarm went off.

Uh Oh. That’s not good.

We flagged down a guy and his son in a blue Tidewater and he promised to look for us on the way back in just in case our boat overheated at throttle.

We called no joy and put the boat at 4200rpms and made all the way home without an overheat alarm…until we were idling at the Shem Creek boat ramp.

So to the guy in the blue Tidewater…we made it. Thanks for watching our backs.

…so…anybody got any ideas on the overheat? We changed the impeller just before the eclipse and ran up to Bulls…today was the first overheat and it picked a bad time to act up.

Did you change the housing when you changed the impeller? What about the gasket for the housing, what kind of condition was it in?
I’ve seen a hole in the water tube also cause what you’re describing. (not likely you have a pin hole in the tube, but I did once…Long story)

We replaced the whole kit…cup, plastic housing, bottom plate gasket, o-rings. Some reading suggest the poppet valve. Wonder if that was the issue…or a thermostat?

I tell you…you do not want your overheat alarm to go off at Y-73.

Engine was fine and the sensor is bad?

After being released, a lot of fish die, but a lot of them live also.

poppit valve- been there done that more than once

I don’t even know where the poppet valve or thermostat is on my 2005 F250TXR

Possible Yamaha corrosion…pull the lower unit and look up at the exhaust tuner for pitting. Low rpm overheat alarm and bubbles from the lower unit while idling at the dock are the tell tale signs.

Glad to hear you made it home without anymore troubles. We looked for you on the way back as promised.

It was a big relief just knowing y’all were back there. How bad was the ride in…it was getting white cappy on us…kept thinking “whoa…one more hour this is will be a little bit worse.”

Same experience in my Yamaha with overheading only at idle or low RPM’s, poppet valve. Wasn’t expensive to fix.

Spartanburg/Edisto
Sea Hunt 27 “Saltwater Gospel”
Bomb Island 16 “Hookin’ Heels”

It was definitely “a little worse”! My hopes for a flat ride home were quickly dashed. I was able to run 30 for the first 4 miles - not too bad. By the time we got to the jetties I was doing 12 mph and getting a beat down.

Forgive me if Im wrong but doesn’t the poppet valve open only under pressure? The higher RPM’s increase the water pressure forcing the vale open. Thus allowing more water flow. At idle (to around 2k-3k)it should be closed. Bulls has some good fishing. It also has a fair amount of low spots. My money would be on small water flow compromise with sand. Increasing water flow (because open poppet at higher RPM’s) could overcome the blockage. 2nd, possible therms. Not sure Id put much on a poppet.
Getting a strong stream out the back?

Yeah…Peeing like a race horse at throttle.

My apologies for not trying to reach on the vhf to tell you the conditions were deteriorating closer to shore. I guess I owe you twice.

Just to cover all basis. You say strong at throttle. How about idle?

check your thermostats. pull them put them in a pot of water on the stove and see if they open up?

I took my Suzuki 200 out one day last year and it overheated at idle. I thought I might have picked up a bag or something and raised the motor to check it. Nothing I could see was wrong looking back over the transom. The motor ran fine at speed but would overheat at idle. When I brought it home I discovered I had left the flush plug out of the back port after my last wash down. It was laying in the driveway next to where I park the boat.
After replacing this it ran fine with no overheat problems. Good luck with your engine captain!

To help someone else, I guess I should update:

It was suggested that the pressure relief valve (poppet) was stuck or the thermostats were bad.

After some THT help, I was told that I didn’t have a poppet/relief valve on my motor…it had to be the thermostat.

After taking a lot of stuff off, I found the thermostat (incorrectly labeled as poppet in the picture)

There was a good bit of crud on the thermostat, but I was unable to easily pull it out and I was afraid I’d break something. I closed it up and figured I’d get a mechanic to work on it.

Then Hurricane Irma was said to be heading our way and since my boat yard has a giant tree sitting directly behind my boat, I decided to run to the boat to Greenville in case Irma knocked the tree down.

I told my brother in law about the problem and he found a mechanic that was recommended by his family and he took the boat to the guy.

The next day the mechanic called me and said he’d pulled the water impeller and I had failed to reuse a bushing from the old water pump housing and I needed to bring it to him. Aaaaah…can’t. He ordered a bushing. Why the new impeller kit didn’t come with a bushing…I don’t know.

Anyway, he installed the missing bushing and replaced the 2 thermostats and said the boat passed the run test. Only took him 1 days to fix.

Now I gotta get time to go get the boat from Greenville.

Glad you made it back. That’s a lucky thing! Can’t have left over parts on a boat motor.

Good on BaldCypress for being a team player out there!
