My motor (2001 25 hp yamaha 4 stroke) recently began starting rough instead of firing right up. It literally happened overnight. When I popped the cowling I am finding magnet shards in several spots. Is this part of my stator or flywheel magnets? I can’t find anything online about this. How serious is this and can I replace this myself? Thanks.
In case anyone was wondering…the magnets on the flywheel came loose. Two of them were completely chewed up. Hopefully the stator is okay. Crazy part is you have to buy a new or used flywheel, because they do not sell the magnets separate!! So if your boat is vibrating a lot when idling and rough to start, check for magnet shards!
