Mahi Fly As Requested

So this was a crazy task, easy to tie but very time consuming, hope it works as to I have never used or tied a Mahi Fly before … Good Luck Trey

Figured I would give a progressive build post (yes it was a build)

9/0 34007 I don’t usually use them but couldn’t find a 9/0 Gamakatsu, surprised my vise held this large of a hook

Used some Orvis Streamer material to wrap the hook and provide some flash under the EP

The stacking begins, White and Royal EP Fiber

Contemplated on leaving him this size, but went ahead and made him larger

Always use more material than needed on the first attempt at a fly

Body almost completed

After shaping

Now for some eyes

Finished fly, tying this for someone I would charge no less than $25 just for the time that goes into this guy, the next one I tie will be framed haha, yes this fly was meant to mirror a ballyhoo and with a little bit more shaping I could of slimmed him down but decided to leave him fluffed out and a bigger body

My fly tying setup, and a nice place of solitude when needed

Haha that’s pretty awesome. Make sure your buddy sends you a pic of the mahi caught on that and you put it up on here!

This is pretty awesome, what’s the best way to get into fly tying?

Light travel’s faster than sound. This is why some people appear smart until you hear them speak.

get a reasonable vise, and start tying, you can probably get started for $100, with materials and your basic material, you could do it cheaper but you need the rotary vise to tie saltwater flies. Rotary meaning one that spins

Go see Scotty at the Low Country Fly shop… He has the Peak vises… like $150 and they are AWESOME… I have been at mine all weekend and love it… I was going to get a Renzetti, but after using the Peak I like it better and it’s like $100 cheaper. You can get a Terra vise for like $50 and they are fine and they work but I like the pedestal vise much better compared to a clamp on vise.

@Nikon. got any tips, photos, or videos on tying Gurglers?

That’s a beautiful Mahi fly! I’ll bet it works if you put it in front of one.

Paul,
Here is Don Reeds version. Floats hook down for better hookup rates. Don’t need rubber legs and hackle… Just start foam cloer to hook eye. Great design.

I received the orvis starter fly tying kit for Xmas 2 years ago from my mother in law. It was good for tying some flies for trout bass and panfish and the vise only lasted a few months but came with a decent amount of materials for the 150 she paid for it. But I would definitely get a rotary vise ey are so much easier to work with. I have the terra rotary and my wife got it at Scottie’s place for around $50. Astor materials I would say start off slow unless u have the cash. I can go into the shop and drop $200 on materials and not even realize it

(**() smokey, you have that problem too haha

I got the griffin mongoose vise a couple years back and have loved it. Tie everything from little poppers for bream to big old baitfish patterns without and issue. I think it was like $180 which is higher than some but I looked at it like an investment. I am sure I kid myself into thinking I am saving money by tying my own flies haha. I will go to orvis/basspro to get one thing like a particular color hackle of buck tail and walk out with a bag full…“i may need some of this…” Check out feather-craft.com for material too. Its good stuff and they got a little of EVERYTHING!!

I have looked at that site before, never ordered anything, how are they on shipping, I have noticed online that they have huge shipping charges, if I need something I call home to Hunter Banks, speak with Shane and he puts it in an envelope the cheapest way possible

@Newman, thanks for the tip on the Gurgler pattern. I’m up here at Bald Head Is, NC.for the week. Was supposed to go out today with Capt Seth Vernon but weather has other ideas. Have caught some nice flounder on white Gulp shrimp but a little too much wind for the long rod. It looks better Wed through Friday & will be going out on my own then. I have one Gurgler to last the week!

That is one way to tie up a gurgler type pattern… I use a couple different ways… Speaking of topwater flies… there is a fly tying challenge going on at SCkayakfishing.com in the fly tying section… gotta be a member of that board but it’s free… should be a few cool top water patterns coming up… that is the challenge this month… every month will have a new one and we will be having a CPR fly fishing challenge each month as well…
