Searched but couldn’t find my answer in this or other post.
Went offshore with some friends yesterday and we did pretty good with Mahi (only my second trip). Had a blast but when we were cleaning them I noticed a couple had hard deposits in the meat. None of us where familiar with this. These deposits where dark brown in color, hard yet you could still bend it. The deposits came out in one piece leaving a hole in the meat.
Does anyone know what causes this? None of the fish looked like they had any old wounds…
I saw that once in a mahi a few years back, and the thought of it still disgusts me. That entire filet was tossed. I was told it was scar tissue from where the fish had been wounded from a previous gaff attempt and got off. Makes sense if you think back at how many fish get off during gaffing, but I’m only reporting what I was told…

I’ve seen it. I just pick it out.
I cleaned several fish last year with dark/hard spots and when they were dissected they yeilded almost a tree-bark like substance. I just figured them to be some sort of parasite. We just cut around as 7cs alluded to, and I haven’t recieved a complaint yet to date…
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.
