Mahi Return

Anyone have any bold predictions on when the mahi will be making their fall migration back into SC waters? Im planning on trying to catch em up late this month.

Yes, in April…

Typically we don’t get a fall “run”

Is that Spring April or Fall April?

Well the reason i asked is because i have caught mahi in the fall in 2009-2011 but have not fished in SC waters in the fall since then. Was just looking for some current ■■■■■■■■ from you fine gentleman but i guess i had my hopes set to high. Should have figured as much. Or have you not tried or just not know how to fish for them in the fall?

we caught 6 peanuts on Wednesday, only 3 on Thursday but one was a 20lbr

I was out in the Black Banks area in 75 ft of water Saturday looking for Grouper. Found plenty of smaller BSB when a half dozen Mahi found me. i hooked into one and let him swim around the boat for a while but the others would not play. Then about 50 yards from us the ocean blew up with bait and the Mahi were busting out of the water everywhere. Within 10 to 15 seconds it was all over.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

We were diving on friday and after the boat was anchored for a while we had a school of about 20 peanuts that hung around us for a while. That was in 90 ft and the water was real blue and flyers and bait everywhere in that area. You can still catch them in the fall you just have to be lucky and run into that school of them.

If you take the time to read Don’s website from front to back you can really learn a lot about the fish. They grow at an insane rate and the peanuts you usually catch in the fall could have easily hatched from eggs laid and fertilized during the spring/summer migration.

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

I have caught dolphin in 60 ft of water in may but in no way would I suggest targeting them there or then. The same goes for fishing for dolphin in october in SC. But of course you have fished here in the fall before and being the fine fisherman that you obviously are should know the fall is typically better for sailfish and wahoo. Never the less dont’ forget to post a report from your dolphin trip later this month!

I have caught mahi every month of the year. A few things I have noted - Almost every female I catch is full of eggs. I believe we have a resident population off shore in the stream as long as the water temps are up. With that said - after the spring -early summer run its a crap shoot. Not much migrates south against the northward push of the GS
