From the looks of the reports you need to go to NC. Not too much happening around here. Maybe a few small one still hanging around.
Good luck!

Dnr in gt county.
this time of year? sunburn, heat, sharks, red snapper…
If you really need some help on HOW to catch easy fish, WHERE to catch them, WHAT to use for bait, and how DEEP they are, you might want to take someone along with you that knows what they are doing. I mean that in the nicest way possible. We all started somewhere and just posting up and asking how to do it when there’s hundreds of reports on this website with various nuggets of info in all of them seems kind of silly. My advice would be to take someone with you, or at least just be safe and get a hot spots map. Decide whether you want to troll or bottom fish and bring the according gear.
Also, this is the reports section, so titling something “Mahi” in the reports section in August is well just darn wrong.

Is your boat grey? Do you troll through weedlines, dragging baits through schools of fish and birds people are drifting and throwing poppers at? Do you cut through the weedline dragging baits clogged with weeds while two other boats are pitching chunks and jigs under the mile long, debris filled, life everywhere mat?
If so, I can tell you where to go to catch something.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Lol Salty. You seem a little salty. Speaking from an experience you had this past weekend?
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

Nah, earlier in the year. Those fellows were
Touche and I got a 25lb bull last Friday along with 4 stud Hoos.
Go to west marine and they have maps of the area with all the spots of bottom areas like the garden, Y-73, and Comanche for example. You can catch b-liners amberjack Seabass shark and cuda all day bottoms fishing. Then look for weedlines a little further out and troll. But mackerel you can just throw some live bait out and move very very slow to catch them. I have a single outboard as well and I run out there all the time on nice days. Just download the wind finder and sailflow app to get good bouy data on the conditions.

Thanks Cmeyers, how deep when bottom fishing and what are you using?

Around 90-100ft and I use frozen squid or live bait I catch with a cast net. Sometimes if I reel in a small fish and I can’t unhook him without him dying I cut him up and use him. They bite anything! Oh and amberjack will tear vertical jigs up just make sure they are heavy ones so they sink a good amount. You will need at least 8 Oz sinkers too to get to the bottom quick.

Seeing some of the best dolphin fishing we’ve had all year here in Islamorada, also some fatty Blackfins have shown up on the offshore humps , blacking out the wells with pilchards and live chumming later in the day and it’s some crazy good fishing, but of course we’re feeding quite a few to the sharks
Cmeyers how far you go out?

Do you have any experience on the ocean in your boat? Experience fishing offshore?
25-30 miles out in a boat when you’ve never run it in the ocean and don’t have experience is putting your and the crew’s lives in danger. Have you looked at the forecast? 3’@8-9 with a 15mph NE wind running out of MI is forecast, guaranteed it won’t be 8-9 seconds with the wind out of the NE.
Don’t be stupid, leave the boat at home and hire a guide that can teach you a little the first few times out.

I agree with Salty, don’t be that guy we hear about being looked for by the Coast Guard. Hire a guide, or ask a guide to let you volunteer as a deckhand on a few charters. If all else fail, watch a lot of youtube videos and stay at an Holiday Day Express the night before.
Capt.Ric Fish On!
Listen to them. It appears you’ve never been offshore. I’m not trying to be a smartass but do you even know how to run the boat?
Per reports there have been little to no mahi here for a few weeks. Do yourself a favor and stick to trolling for kings just outside the jetties or some bottom fishing at the nearest reef you can find. Don’t go out of cell service.
If you want to catch just anything I’m sure you can get into some big sharks. Put some wire on the bottom around inlets/jetties.
