does any one know if it’s legal to make your own brush piles and/or artificial reefs in the inland lakes?
It depends…check with the lakes owner/operator…you can in Lake Murray as long as it does not interfere with navigation. You cannot in Lake Greenwood.
I have last years christmas tree and this years tree for anyone who wants them. Looking to buy property on the main river just above Blacks and might should keep them to make a crappy Hole 6-10’ off the dock. But anyone who wants 2 let me know.

ill take them Mike
After Christmas there are usually drop off spots for trees and you can get all you want.
I know at one time the old Allied Chemical plant was a drop off spot and there would be hundreds there.

and they dont mind people coming and getting them?
also, im going to be putting a flotation device on the top of each tree so that it will stand up in the water. i know people have used two liter bottles before, but the idea of intentionally submerging more trash into our lake doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. so any ideas on alternatives? its going to be hard to find something that is biodegradable but also something that will last long enough to keep the tree afloat.
I got one right now if anyone wants it. I’ll have another one I’ll leave out for any taker on monday following Christmas. Hit me up on PM.

I never picked any up, but they just grind them up, so I can’t imagine why they would care.
The only time I did do it many years ago, I was able to come up with enough just picking up from in front of people’s houses in my hood.
If you haven’t done it before, you’ll be surprised how much weight it takes to sink those Christmas trees. Especially since they will still be green. Have plenty of cinder blocks ready.

i have a concrete mixer, im thinking of just making a simple square mold and making a bunch of “anchors” my self. ill be putting a piece of pvc or something through the middle to give me something to put a piece of rope or wire through to tie to the tree.
i also thought about just building a mold and putting the xmas tree trunk in the middle of the mold and pouring concrete around the trunk, then i wouldnt have to worry about having to tie the block to the tree.
The trees will float. Just put concrete around the trunk at the bottom and when you drop them, drop them vertically and kinda slow. They will stand up nicely. I know brush and trees work great but nothing beats a brush pile made of pvc. When you come back to fish the brush you have to fish on top of it or on the edges so not to get hung… With a pvc tree you can fish “inside” the tree and it will produce much better and not have to worry about hang ups… just a thought for ya.

yeah the PVC is going to be stage two. the xmas trees are free so i figured that would be a good first try before i went and spent too much money on PVC. although the more i “engineer” the xmas tree piles, the more im thinking i should just keep it simple or do PVC

If you go that route maybe make an X with a couple of pieces of rebar? at the bottom of the cement block to make a base to keep the tree upright?

Isn’t there a regulation, that all new brush piles have to be recorded and the GPS numbers posted, in the Fresh Water Fishing Forum:question:
Mech, Sent you a PM.
The tops off of sweet gum trees make the best crappie piles in my opinion. When my family owned the lot in Church Cove of Bear Creek, Diddy and I cut and sank dozens of them and were in the slabs for many years. The gums hold up a lot better than Christmas trees. That ended when the lot was sold.

GPS maps will be sold to raise money for more and more reefs

yeah i heard sweet gums and holly bushes work well. how long ago were those sweet gums layed down? think they still exist?
These work good and last a long time . Ripped up lumber in cement . Limbs last a lot longer or lumber ripped down if you have scarps .
That must be an old picture , it was several moons ago when I took that bathtub out for a remodel job . Glad I got all that stuff hauled off .
Not saying that I’ve done this , but similar to the above if you have access to bamboo, which is quite plentiful around here. http://www.actionfishingtrips.com/habitat.htm . There is one idea that would be easy to put out right now while Murray is down. Also, used 3 gallon landscape buckets are a much cheaper alternative (usually free) to purchasing 5 gallon buckets, but of course I, personally, wouldn’t know
.
