making ice

not sure how many of you buy your ice, but if you do consider making it. $5-$10 a trip adds up to a nice rod & reel or two over a season. 2-3 gallon or 1/2 gallon jugs with screw tops (like the ones bessingers sells thier tea in) work well. they are reusable and if you leave one out of your ice chest you have ice cold drinking water or a refreshing shower. just sayin

I do gallon milk jugs. Saves a stop in the a.m. and big chunks of ice last longer than store bought. Never thought about the points you mentioned, so that is kind of a bonus, also!

Interesting. Thanks for the tip. We freeze regular water bottles when we surf / pier fish. Never really thought of that for the boat.

You will never get the mountains to turn blue with frozen milk jugs, you need that ice/water slurry.

Karma is 360 degrees

2 liter soda bottles work well also. I freeze one every night so I have cold water to drink all day at work or when doing yard work on the weekend. Take one in the boat when the chance comes to go fishing.

I bought a small ice machine from frank and it works great. He found it at the flea market.Cost me $200 about 6 years ago.

Freeze the Coors to pack your Bud Light in. Keeps BL’s cool while preventing someone from accidently drinking Coors light!

Thats a good idea. If you have an extra freezer to store extra jugs in…

Or find one of those road side ice machines…they are cheaper and usually bigger bags of ice…I like the frozen jug idea for fish but beverages I think need ice…blue can or not!! haha

Just realized I wasn’t completely clear on the gallon ice thing. I bang the outside a few times with a hammer, cut the botom of the milk jug out, and dump the chunks in the cooler. I don’t just lay a couple gallons in still in the plastic. Works just fine for brewskis.

Now that’s a great idea Vinman!

It will if you freeze saltwater in the jugs:smiley::smiley:

We have used rock salt, very heavy, and froze in gallon jugs and it gets much colder

I increased the bin capacity of my home ice maker. I bought a rectangular restaurant serving pan that fits perfectly under the ice bin. I cut a hole in the bin and mounted it on a metal sheet, made from a cookie sheet, that fits over the top of the restaurant pan. It holds about 10 lbs. of ice and refills over night after I empty it. It has saved me hundreds of trips to the convenience store.

BP Station on Coleman offers FREE Ice when you put gas in your boat…Nice surprise when i stubbled upon that one!

The frozen bottles work great.I have used them in my fish cooler for years,I also freeze some bottles of water and use them along with some ice for drinks. Helps keep drinks cold and I always have some cool water to drink.I have found that the square bottom type bottle really work good, they are from cranberry juice ,I put one in each corner keeps the fish cooler nice and cold but still have plenty of room when the fish come home to Mama!!
