Malamutes in this climate

When the day comes for us to get a dog (ie, a real one, not a fuzzy rat), I want to be careful not to get a dog that’s inappropriate for our climate.

I’ve always had an affection for malamutes, since we had one when I was a very young child. I vaguely remember him (named “King”, and he looked like one!). We had to get rid of him because he bit the landlord, protecting me.

Anyhow, I’m wondering if anyone here has kept malamutes in this climate. I know of a good number of siberian husky keepers, and they seem to do just fine as long as the owner is wise in what he does with them. I like siberians as well, but partial to the malamutes.

I’m nowheres close to actually getting one at this point… mostly thinking and planning.

I believe cobia256 has malamutes. You should pm him.

Have had several, from charleston, to jazz fl, to Pensacola. They do fine if they are in the house. Wintertime they would steal the blankets from the bed. Just be ready for the shedding, you could side money from the sweaters you could knit.

As far as appropriate for our climate…we have a St. Bernard that hates the cold. During the past couple of ice storms, we had to force her to go outside. During the warmer months we just make sure that she stays hydrated. A five gallon bucket full of ice water in a shaded spot does the trick.

OK good info folks, thanks.

We had two cats in the house at one point, so I am accustomed to the shedding. Hair from a large dog is (so far as my experience tells) easier to control and clean up. Cat hair seems nearly impossible to keep at bay. I’d have it all over my suits, and no amount of sticky-rollers removed it all.

Matt I have two siberian huskies. Only difference between malamutes and siberian huskies are really just there size. Everyone that asks my wife and I how our two hold up to this heat. We have lived with huskies in key west, miami, tampa, jacksonville, maryland, and now here. They are just like any dog when it comes to heat. My two will go out sometime in the blaze of summer and sun bath. When this happens I make sure they have plenty of fresh water and check on them every 10-15 minutes. They are smart when I open the door and they are ready to come in they let me know. Sometime they will pick their head up look at me and plop it right back down looking at me like why did you disturb me. So more or less word be smart and use your head and they will be fine. Biggest thing I tell people with these two breeds of dog is they are escape artists and full of energy. I recommend and invisible fence for your property. Some think it is mean, but it works and now I can have my dogs out in the front yard and have other dogs walk by and my two just lay there. You need to run them. Walks do not work for them. They are breed to work and if you don’t let them get that energy out they will destroy your home. If you can let them run and keep them contained they will be the most loving, affectionate, loyal, well tempered around kid dogs you will have. If you just wanted one cause they are cool looking, but don’t want to or don’t have the time to put into them please stick with the cats. If you do decide you can meet the above requirements make sure you search for a good breeder. My wife and I are firm believes that when it comes to these two breed blood line has a lot to do with how they turn out. As much as my wife an I would love to own them all most foster huskies are about 2 years out when people give them up cause they can’t handle them anymore and at that point is they are like trying to break a wild stallion. Hope this is what you are looking for. If you have more questions let me know.

Cobia, great advice! Are you the fellow I picked up some Momoi fishing line from last Fall? I can’t remember the screen name, but he had two gorgeous (and very well mannered) siberian huskies.

It’s the loyalty that I’m interested in, regarding character. I’ll keep your words about their exercise in mind as well. A lot will depend on where we eventually buy a house. If we have a reasonable sized back yard, this is a possibility. If not, the we won’t be going this route. I’ll just get a bigger reef tank and a big moray eel.

Mr and Mrs Cobia  Have two of the prettiest and most gentle ,well mannered dogs I have ever met. Pics of them can be seen on the CF oyster roast post…but warning…you will want one even more when you see them… There were kids and adults all over them all day and they never got defensive or tried to shy away,…just took all of our oats and hugs happily

Chad, I do remember you telling me in person that you had to run them. And Penny is right, after seeing his siberians, you’ll want one. If only other dogs had the manners like that, and actually looked like a dog should.

I’m pretty sure those manners aren’t pure instinct, I imagine you have some skill at training dogs.

Penny and Matt thank you for the kid word about my “brats” I mean dogs!! They are very good and we feel very fortunate to have them. Now just don’t tell them all this nice stuff when you see them next time. It will go to their heads and they will expect more treats!!

Not quite the same, but I have a Newfoundland and my parents have two they do fine. However, my parents like to get in the pool and mine stays inside almost always, but I do have a kiddie pool for her and spray her down with the freshwater spray off when on the big boat.
