Sunday started off as a WTF kinda day…After an incident in the intracostal we won’t discuss, we got a late start out to the 226.
Ride out was fantastic and made it 5 miles past the banks from Edisto in about hour and a half. Lines in a little before 8:30. Started trolling toward the 226 with very little action between 8:30 and 12:00. We had 2 knockdowns and 1 slinger dolphin.
About 12:00 we had trolled to the 226 with little action and made the decision to troll back towards the banks. We were in about 400’ water and the left corner line goes crazy. Turns out that was the only 50W setup in the spread that could handle what was about to happen next. Buddy(who had never caught a fish trolling) jumps on the rod throws the lever forward and sets back. Next thing we see is Blue Marlin going skyward 40 yds off the corner. Clear lines and get him in the harness for the battle. Fish took drag and took drag for about 1/2 spool and then we begin the backdown dance for the next hour or so, while getting to see a few nice aerial shows.
1 hour into the fight and the fish makes a stuppendous set of aerial shows that we got a few pics and a little video of. During that episode of jumps it became apparent that the fish got tale wrapped. As soon as the show was over he went straight to the bottom in 500’ of water. Then it was unfortunately elementary horsing him in. After about 30 mins we got him to the boat and sure enough he was wrapped. Measured out a fat 84", so I guess 200-250. Tried to revive, but no response. Felt bad having to float him, but I guess that’s just the way it goes.
After that episode we trolled for about another hour and the bite turned on pretty good. Went 5 for 7 on the troll and 1 dolphin via the bow kill that had wandered to close to the fray. Ended the day with 7 dolphins-2 gaffers, 4 slingers, 1 peanut(bow kill) and the Blue suit. Ride in was good except that crappie chop the last 10.
Colors of the day on the dolphin were nothing specific. Blue hit a purple and black
all i can say is that was a day of excitement… other than the lil strech to start with when the fishing was slow, the rest of the day was non stop action…i slammed the ole mahi with my bow… should have had a 20 pounder but he got me wrapped up in the motor and came off… WOW WHAT A DAY!!!
If he was dead, why didn’t you just bring him in the boat and take him to the dock? Someone would have eaten that thing. The filleting photoblog alone would have gone 30 pages.

were yall asking for the legal size over the radio? i heard one boat hooked a blue and had trouble reviving him… never heard back about the release or what… great job guys!! wish that fish was keeping size so he wouldnt float away but like stated before thats fishing.
if people paid attention to the important things in life, there would be a shortage of fishing poles
Even if is was 84 in that is way undersized be glad you did not bring it to the dock, the man probably would have come down hard on you.

I didn’t know that. Thanks.

No wasn’t us, but I heard that on the radio. It was right when we hooked up I believe. Seem to get better as the day rolled on. Don’t know if it had to do with the rain showers that moved in early around the 226.

It is actually 99". That is a federal law. 101" was just what the Govenor’s Cup used to use. Yeah the man doesn’t really look too fondly on killing undersized fish. I am sure that something had it for dinner.
Speaking of the Governor’s Cup, Lil 2 Sleepy, will you be at Edisto that weekend? My company will be one of the sponsors for the event. Sounds like you had a nice day on the water. I was near your house that weekend on the Edisto River.

Hey Brad,
I’m not sure if we’ll be down or not. I will be trying everything in my power to get down there as much as possible between now and then(weather permitting). Have you guys had a chance to get out yet? Win anything on the run this past weekend?

Ethan, The run was fun. Only event was that Wade lost his outboard. I dived and found it Sunday between Geddy’s place and Chris’s place. Look on the freshwater reports and see the 84 lbs. flathead.

you should have cut the line when you first saw he was tail wrapped. Its not just “the way it goes” as you claim. You saw the fish was rapped and you killed it! No ifs ands or but about it. You had the option to release it when you first saw that it was hung by the tail. Next time, boat the fish and eat it!
