After getting our Friday trip cancelled, Mother Nature looked favorably upon us with great conditions and a Sunday outing with Capt Mike Tucker on his Grady Express with Capt Brandon Long and Capt Lawrence Bradhum as first mates. My fishing buddies were Randy ?This is my first offshore trip?, Eric ?Fish love Tecate?, and in-spirit, Walt (unfortunately, Walt had a debilitating case of the craps and literally couldn?t get off the john to go with us).
We got out of the Stono around 5 AM and headed east looking for some 70 degree water which we found about 55-60 miles out. We got the lines in and things were slow until Eric decided it was Tecate time after which we soon gaffed our first dolphin. It was a nice fish pushing 30 lbs, which happened to be Randy?s first blue water fish ever. With this fish trying to destroy the cockpit and everyone?s shins in sight, it soon learned why dolphin everywhere fear Capt Lawrence and his ?fists of fury?.
Boats were zigzagging every which way looking for the magic temp break and we continued to pull in slingers and gaffers for the next few hours, putting 9 in the box. It was around 11:45 and several Tecates later when we got a good hit on the shotgun and the TLD25 with 30lb mono started screaming. Randy was up so he grabbed the rod and got ready to go to work. We were all thinking ?big wahoo? because no one saw the strike and it just started running really hard in the opposite direction. A few moments later, Mr. Blue Marlin broke the surface and started putting on a show in the distance. This was a bigtime fish, estimated to be in the 500lb range. Everyone on the boat went crazy and when the fish turned and started tailwalking and greyhounding back towards the boat, it was literally chaos in the cockpit. Half of us were screaming about the fish, the other half were screaming at Randy to reel like hell! Capt Mike did an excellent job maneuvering the boat and mates Lawrence and Brandon couldn?t have been better at coaching us as Randy, Eric and I all took turns fig
