Returning to Charleston from the Bahamas on Saturday, we came across 3 large schools of mantarays about 60 miles from the jetties, awesome sight out in the open oceon, there had to be several thousand of them.
wow that is cool! any cobia following them around?
What time? I had a school of them come by me at the Charleston 60 at about 5:30 or so on Saturday. I tried casting around them to see if any cobia were around and I hooked up with one of them. He put up one hell of a fight.

Yeah…my thought too. I’d suspect cow nosed rays - mantas are black.

My wife snapped a pic when I was reeling him in. Definitely a cownose ray.

Good picture, too large to fit on the grill though!

last Spring: 6 May we came across a similar school - a good acre of them all in formation on our way back in from 226. By the time I got my foot out of the wheel and got the camera we had run past them and put them down out of sight. We did not know about cobia sometimes being with them at that time
they were scattered around 80-100’ of water last weekend in the Black Banks area…pretty cool to see…

We did see a school of those last Saturday but we also did see two huge manta rays in 300’ that swam right by the boat. Those things can move pretty good for their size.
cow nosed. Been around in good numbers everywhere, even saw a load of em on a good flat in the waterway near moores a month or so ago.
I can tell what a mahi is, but a ray is a ray. We came across 3 school (flocks) of them, several thousand would be a good estimate, saw them about 3:30 or so on Saturday
Awesome to shoot when you are bowfishing at night
