Mantis Shrimp

Have anyone ever caught matis shrimp in a good number? I’m talking about 6" plus size

We’ve caught them here and there never in many numbers. Why are you asking?

fish today work tomorrow

Great for live bait! They’re stronger and live way longer

I have caught 2 or 3 either at Bennetts Point or Wiggins.

We caught tons of them trawling, but never in a cast net.

I have caught them in the deep holes occasionally for the last 20 years. We caught a huge one last year on a sabiki rig offshore and I put it back down on the bottom and wham had a bite and breakoff in the structure instantly. They must be pretty good bait.

How do you get them on your hook without getting whacked?

I hold them away from the business end towards the top. They’re actually pretty awesome creatures if you have a small aquarium to put them in alone. They learn to associate the person with food , and will actually start to beg if you feed them at a consistent time. They’re a terror on some fish and crabs too.

I know people pay good money for them at local fish tank stores.

I have caught a couple in the cast net at BB over the years, none over about 3-4". Saw a special on TV about those things and I wouldn’t hold them before, after watching that show I really don’t think I want to hold them. Those suckers can pack a whollop with those little hammers.

I thought those things could break aquarium glass?

We catch one or two funky shrimp a year, heard them called mantis shrimp and heard them called stone shrimp. Dark gray, about as long as a beer can, scaled armor?

Tiger shrimp maybe? They are an invasive species and you are asked to report catching them to the DNR. This one was caught at Shellman’s Bluff, GA recently.

They get huge, close to a pound, even get caught on hook and line sometimes.

Jeez that thing is huge!! But I thought the mantis had a flat tail, and was more odd looking than that…

In the late 60’s to early 70’s we trawled Bull’s Bay and would have several mami’s out of each 100+lb’s. When I shrimp BB, Ch. harbor, Bennett’s Point or Hilton Head we catch a few each year. (Feisty little devils aren’t they). Good luck to you shrimping this year.

See ya on the water/19’ Neptune/115 Johnson.

This is a mantis shrimp. The backs looks like what I’ve caught but I don’t remember those long arms on the front…

son caught a mantis years ago on a sandbar. none of us knew what it was. had no idea how dangerous - he didn’t get whacked. I put it on a bottom rig and caught a nice bonnet head in minutes! great bait

Back in the 80’s the aquarium glass was a lot thinner and that was a problem. You can find videos on youtube of people making them strike the glass to show it won’t happen.

Personally, I’d still get an acrylic tank haha

My buddy Lloyd got nailed by one, that was some funny shizznit.
