Does anyone have any first hand experience with the Mantus anchor? I’ve never had any success with the Danforth style anchors and was looking to make a change. Just curious.
Don’t take it as an insult if you already know this, but a common mistake to make: make sure you have a good amount of heavy chain attached to the danforth anchor. If you tie rope directly to the anchor, or don’t have enough chain, the anchor won’t work. With the right setup the danforth is typically a good inshore anchor for most bottoms around here.
I have no experience with the mantus…sorry. I’m sure someone here can chime in about them.
make sure the danforth has a solid shank and not the open one. I use 10 ft 5/16 chain on mine…14 lb anchor
…26 ft bay boat, it holds no matter the conditions.
when saltfisher speaks…listen ^^

Very good advice, listen to Saltfisher and Optiker , also learn how to rig the Danforth or a Claw to break away in case of a hang up,it’ll save you a lot of $$$$…just sayn !!!

I’ve tried short chains, long chains, and no chains. The anchor just will not grab/dig. Saltfisher - my last set-up was using a 10’ anchor chain on an 8#-10# anchor (17’ boat). I drug that sorry anchor all over South Edisto River last summer - it was literally useless to me for the entire week I was down there. I realize they can make just about anything look good in controlled conditions but the Youtube videos for the Mantus Anchor with head to head comparison’s seemed impressive. While they did indicate that the Danforth would hold more in sandy conditions once it set, the problem I have is getting it to set. The big draw back to the Mantus is cost - that’s an expensive anchor (8# anchor is around $150 without chain).

I always make sure to “lower” the anchor into the water vs “throwing”, it gives me the best hooking results by keeping the anchor free of the rode and chain. As an alt to the $ mantus, I’ve read good things about the claw style anchors.
I had a claw anchor until it stuck too good one day, just orderex another. The danforth wasn’t even compareable. Also not saying you do it but people drop there anchor and try to anchor straight up and down, any anchor will have trouble setting this way. If you drop your anchor further away from your spot and give it slack and drift back to your spot it will help it set better. It gets a better angle on the line, less vertical pull and is more stealthy.
I thought 40 used a cinder block
2nd the make sure it’s not the slip ring anchor…not worth anything except for a beach anchor. A solid shank danforth type with a good bit of heavy chain works for me!!

What badfish said , Learning how to deploy and set anchor is as important if not more important than style of anchor. I always check wind and current and try to determine drift direction, once drift direction is known, move into current/wind direction from target no less than 4-5 times the water depth, slowly lower anchor til bottom contact. don’t drag anchor but keep slight tension on rode until about 10 or so feet from target fishing spot then cleat rode up,let boat drift set anchor… I seldom ,almost never, have to make multable attempts to set anchor. If set up shorts you of target just let out more rode … I use a 10lb danforth with close to 6-7 ft of 3/8 galv. chain rigged to break away in case of a hang up.
I know this method sounds sorta lengthy in time taken but once you get the hang of it takes no longer than other ways , and as i said this method seldom fails to set for me in areas i fish , clay , sand , pluff or moderately rocky…
Hints>>> Mark anchor rode at 10ft intervals
>>>>>>>> Use rode that is at minimum 200 ft long for inshore 500 for offshore…
>>>>>>>> Braid eye loop or large snap hook on tail end of rode and fasten to boat as close to bow as possible befor trying to deploy anchor…
>>>>>>>> Never ever deploy anchor to known debris littered bottom unless anchor is rigged to break away !!! can be very costly !!!
>>>>>>>>Always carry a small marker bouy to mark fishing target along with a large enough anchor bouy in case of need to drop anchor in a hurry to chase the BIG ONE… Connect this bouy to the snap or eye loop on tail end of rode…
catch em up and post lots of pics:smiley:

If it makes you feel any better, it looks like you are not the only one not having any luck holding with a danforth style anchor.

Thanks for all the input on anchoring. From the sound of it, I don’t think I’m doing much if anything wrong with what I’ve tried in the past with the Danforth style anchor with the exception of the slip ring type. I had specifically chosen that style in the event it became stuck for ease in retrieval (who knew). Thanks again for all the input and tight lines to all.

Yeah I tried a slip ring style b/c it fit in my anchor locker…was horrible. I got a solid shank and cut a hole in the shank end to rig for breakaway.

I’ve got slip ring too - basically worthless unless I got a good bottom to work with and tide /wind isn’t ripping. Until I get a new one, my trolling motor is the anchor

In another life I cruised between here and Georgetown on a 27’ sailboat. The overriding principle I found was adequate chain and rode. I kinda used 8-1 if nothing crazy or 10-1 or more if ripping currents. I know that’s a lot of rope and swing, but I slept better at night.

Solid shank danforth, had slip ring style for lunch hook.
A few years ago my danforth quit holding. After a lot a bad words I inspected the thing and found out it had a bent shaft. After trying to bend it back, I bought a new one to use for the rest of the trip and when I got home I had to take a torch and a vise and streaghted it out, now it works as it should again. I was amazed that the twisted shaft would prevent it from holding. well now I have a back up.
Agree with a couple of these guys. I had a bent danforth, not bent bad either that I fought for a whole season that made me want to sell my boat. Plenty of rode and ten foot of chain too. I replaced it with one that wasn’t bent and now it holds my boat. I never fish where there isn’t heavy current. Don’t know if this is your problem or not but worth looking into. Your anchor setup should hold your boat unless on hard bottom.
