(**(), I have the misfortune of heading to Marathon in late June. Bummer, I know.
I have been to the Keys on 4 previous trips and have had some great days on the water with various guides out of Islamorada and Key West. This trip I am going to be based in Marathon. We are planning to rent a house on a canal and rent a 18’-19’ CC for the week. So I will have access to a boat, not a flats boat, but it will put my on the water.
Here is my plan and questions. My plan is to DIY most mornings and evenings. I’m thinking about looking near inlets for rolling Tarpon, hitting some mangroves for some Snook, and fishing some docklights at night for whatever random fishes show themselves.
Anybody got a guide recommendation for that region of the Keys? I know that this will be the end of big Tarpon season, but I am actually thinking of telling the guide I would like to target Snook or Crevalle Jacks.
Also, wondering if anyone would be will to share some tips for the DIY portion of my trip?
Did the docklights from a yak. Had a blast. Its pretty simple fishing. The submerged lights were the most productive for me. My son fished small jigs and DOA shrimp. I was the motor so we didn’t fly fish at all.
Don’t be surprised if some of them turn the lights out on you.
Islander - what kinds of species were you finding at the docklights? And thanks for the heads up on folks turning off the lights - I’ll take no offense and move on to the next.
I’ll be staying on Grassy Key (south end of Marathon) most of June and part of July. I’m def not a keys expert but I will be happy to share what knowledge I do have. PM me when you get down there…
Thanks Salty. Will do. I’m really looking forward to this trip!!! I’m gonna head to the fly shop and pick up some new tying materials soon, so I can start working on a new box.
