Marathon Update

Fished the reef today after the storm blew over. Caught some various bottom dwellers on sabiki rigs in 20 feet. yellow tails some sort of mackral. Pushed out to the drop off. Dropped anchor in 60’. 2 minutes later had a black grouper in the boat bout 10lbs and 26 inches. Dropped a live ballyhoo to the bottom and 30 seconds later something nailed it and took my dads line straight under the reef and got hung up. had to cut the line. Dropped back a ballyhoo under a balloon for the hell of it on an ugly stick intercoastal and 15 minutes later my dad goes BILL BILL BILL. HOLY $H*T we had a bill crashing a bait on a redfish rod. I pulled a big rookie mistake and started reelin it in. fish followed it to about 40 feet from the boat the hauled tail. Man it was cool watchin him jump after that bait. ■■■■ my rookie mistakes next time ill let him till he starts takin drag then pull the anchor lol. good times in Flo rida. Dont think im gonna leave for a while

What area of Marathon are you in? We are on Duck Key fighting these darn storms and get caught everytime we head out. Hopefully this afternoon we can head out to the 700’ line for some good trolling. Sorry you had that bill get away, would have been exciting to watch that on a red rod

I have been going to Marathon for last 15 years for the Lobster season, 6 Aug start date. The fishing is always great on the ocean side or Gulf side. to be within sight of land and also be in the gulf-stream is really fantastic. I am going for the first two weeks of August this year just so I can get in more fishing. Have you been out to the sombrero reef as yet? it’s only 5 miles off shore and is loaded with bottom fish.
