March Florida Keys Flies

Hey yall Im going to Florida for spring break and have a charter booked for one of the days. We will be fishing inshore around Key Largo. The Captain said that he does not specialize in fly fishing but would not mind me bringing the rod to use some. Depending of the conditions I may or may not use it but I still want to be prepared. What are some good flies to get before I get down there that can do well on the flats? Any advice to help me hook up with a fish down there would be appreciated.

The best commercially tied keys flies i have seen come from ssflies.com
The permit crab works well on bones and permit. Their tarpon flies are topnotch.

Thanks Capt. those flies look great I’ll be ordering some of those

If you want to fly fish you can certainly find a capt down there that specializes in it, dont settle. Best of luck, and if you have never fished the keys you are in for a treat!

Far better it is to dare mighty things to win glorious triumphs even though checkered with failure, than to take ranks with those poor spirits who never enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

Thanks nu2salt, This will be my first guided trip down there. Taking the woman and her parents with us for only a 3/4 day so its not gonna be a hardcore trip just hoping to catch some fish we dont get up here. I’ll let yall know how we do we will be fishing wednesday.

Edit: I forgot to say that I picked up a chartreuse tarpon toad and a Merkins crab fly at Bass Pro, I’ll probably get more from a local shop down there that knows whats working now.

Florida Keys Outfitters in Isla. has the best flies down there, its located beside the Green Turtle Rest. There is a world of difference between what they carry and what Bpro offers.

Didnt get to use the fly rod but we had a great day with Captian Lain fishing. We caught this 30Lb tarpon first thing before the sun got high. He jumped several times and then broke the leader at the boat. We also got a hand full of reds, mangroove snappers, sea trout, lady fish, and baby cudas. It was an awesome day Captain Lain does a great job.

glad you had a great time!
