The non-skid on my 12 year old boat is non-existent and the deck could use some sprucing up. I am planning a minor restoration this fall/winter where I plan to put down a coat of Kiwi-Grip and repaint the parts of the deck not covered in non-skid. I have used Kiwi-Grip before but don’t have much experience with marine paint. This is not a fancy boat so I’m not looking to spend a ton of money as I know marine paint can get pricey. Rustoleum makes a marine paint but I do not know if it is any good. In short, I’m looking for recommendations for reasonably priced topside paint, preferably a one part paint.
Thanks!

A lot of boat builders I know have used Rustoleum Marine paint and reported very good results. I have not tried it myself but trust a few voices that I know. My other choices are Petit Easypoxy and Interlux Brightside for mid price paint that does a pretty good job. Both are 1 part paints.
I’ve got enough leftover Kiwi Grip to do your whole deck that I will give you. A half gallon or more. Otherwise it will go bad sitting in the can in my shop before I will use it again. It’s white.
for those that have used Kiwi-grip, how well has it held up and how well does it clean up?
Anyone willing to let me come look at it? I’m debating on what to use on my little whaler.
Larry,
What would be the downside to the rustoleum paint? I don’t mine if it fades, I just don’t want something that flakes off and makes a mess.
I would assume application is a big cause of paint flaking off. I’ve been on boat with flaking paint. It’s a mess.
I have used it to restore a jonboat and have been quite happy with it. It goes on easy, cleans up easy and looks really good. I like that you can control how “non-skid” you want it to be.
Larry, sent you a PM. As always, thanks!

I don’t know, I’ve never used it myself and have no idea how it holds up over the long term. Not sure it’s even been on the market long enough that anybody knows. Rustoleum usually makes pretty good products, but you generally get what you pay for too. Personally I probably wouldn’t use it. Mostly because I’ve learned how to use a few specific ones and how they hold up. Every one is different and has their own learning curve, so I stick with what I know works for me and not re-invent the wheel with every project. Petit Easypoxy is my go to for a decent paint that holds up well, for a very reasonable price. I know it works.
It depends on the finish quality you desire and your budget. The last paint I used was a 3 part and cost $500 a gallon. Easypoxy is about 1/4 of that price and much easier to use. Rustoleum probably cost even less than that.
I used a rustoleum marine paint from lowes with the nonskid additive. It has held up for years in a small skiff. For the first year the nonskid was pretty abrasive on my legs where I sat so be careful

I missed this question, sorry. I’ve used gallons of Kiwi Grip, on many boats. It holds up very well and cleans up easily enough. Good stuff. I put it on the deck of my fishing boat 8 years ago. It’s seen a whole lot of use and abuse, and could use a refinishing job about now. But if it can withstand 8 years of me beating the crap out of it, it’s pretty good stuff. Still perfectly usable, just starting to look a little shabby.
Larry,
I used the Rustoleum topside paint from Lowes recently. I applied black gloss to a faded blue stripe on my cabin and gloss sand on the inside of my cabin after I removed all the old mildew monkey fur carpeting. The paint was 13 dollars at lewes versus 50 for something similar from Awlgrip at West Marine. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out. I used an electric sprayer in the cabin and a brush on the exterior. Both methods worked great. I would recommend it, save yourself some money .

I had someone replace the floor in my boat and it is done in Kiwi Grip. I am very happy with it and it cleans up fine. Your more than welcome to come take a look at it. They did not finish the seams of the floor like I though they would have but that has nothing to do with the paint. And the floor cracked so I had to do a repair.
