Marine Resource Education Program

I finished the second part of a Marine Resource Education Program this week. The program is intended to share information and invite fishermen to get more involved in the management process. I learned a lot and made some great connections. The program presenters want those of us who attended to reach out to other fishermen and share what we learned. Please take a look at the presentation information and post a reply with any questions or comments. Thank you. http://www.gmri.org/community/display.asp?a=5&b=15&c=266

It looks like a program where they take the most energetic, enthusiastic, want to change the world people, put them in a controlled environment and whittle them down slowly during small brainwashing sessions.

I was once like you, started to feel sorry for them and the decisions they had to make. Right now Jason has the right idea, IMO. Let’s look at NEW ideas and NEW habitat, keep traditional fishing grounds open.

Courtland, I have been advocating positive solutions like new habitat for years. I have also been trying to get fishermen to coordinate our efforts like we did for VMS because I KNOW that is the ONLY way we can win. Now is the time for us to discuss what solutions we want to advance and how we can get them implemented. The postcard petitions I make oppose closing traditional fishing grounds. They support creating new artificial reef habitat for a few small MPAs and using decent assist devices to greatly increase survival rates of illegal deepwater fish like Warsaw Grouper and Speckled Hind. My beliefs are the same as before I went through MREP. I just learned new things like how to target lionfish and how we can advance our solutions in the council. We are on the same page much more than you seem to think. I am not some naive kid that is easily brainwashed. I am a strong willed man who will defend my beliefs and God-given freedom.

I can tell you are intelligent and passionate about this, I don’t mean to take anything from you. I made no claim as to how I thought it would effect you, merely my personal trip through fishery management.

Plus I just wanted to use that app after I saw Jason’s on the other thread.

We agree on the solution, now we need to coordinate our message and efforts.
