Marine Stereo recommendations?

I am getting ready to purchase a stereo and speakers for my boat. I have a 17’ bay boat and just looking for something that isn’t too expensive and wanted to get someone else’s opinion. If you can recommend one or let me know which ones to stay away from I would appreciate it.

Polyplaner makes excellent products. Very happy withmy stereo going on four years now. Pricey but worth it.

I have really liked this stereo. Has nice gasket and rubber lining - seems to keep a good seal. Pretty inexpensive but you have to get speakers to go with.

Poly Planar speakers have been indestructible for me over the past 4 years, still sounding and looking great. Jensen head unit has been good also. Heard great things about the Clarion head units as well. Get a WaterPROOF head unit, it is worth the extra $$.

i went through 3 clarion units including a very, very expensive one on my 19’ cc seapro before they finally recessed the console and put a good cover in it. seapro was very good to me back then but the radios kept getting full of water. i finally changed to an inexpensive sony with a removeable face and it lasted about two years. going to change to a jvc this time. i can get one from best buy w/remote for$70. it is better than shelling out the big bucks and once again having them go bad after a year or two. good luck.

I recently put one in my Key West 186 (within the last few weeks). I didn’t use a head unit at all but just an amp, speakers, and an AUX jack to plug an ipod/sat. radio, etc. into. The only real limitation is that you don’t have a good AM/FM option. I’m not worried too much about that though since AM/FM radio is dying anyway.

Click the link below to go the topic on here where I described how I did it. It was extremely easy and cheap. It is LOUD but didn’t cost $500 total. A lot of that was tinned wire which is pricey but I needed a lot because I put everything in the ebox of my t-top.

I second the poly planer. I am taking out the JBL and replacing it with a whole poly planer set up. In my opinion on a boat you want the least faciest but the most durable. Sometimes paying a little more will get you a little more durable of a cd/am/fm player.

From reds to marlin you got it.

I bought a setup for a buddy of mine… a Clarion CMD4 (refurb) on e-bay for $140 and a set of JBL Marine 6x9’s for about $75, also on ebay, and it sounds pretty sweet on his 18 Whaler, all for a little over $200.

The Clarion CMD4 and CMD5 are waterproof and are simple to operate. Big buttons and knobs; the bass/trable/fade controls have their own dedicated knobs (so you don’t have to rummage thru some confusing menu), and it’s robustly build. I also like how it has a built-in fan to keep it cool. They’re also expandable if you want to add an iPod interface or Satellite radio. Nice Unit.

Yep. I have to push in on the face while pressing the buttons to get anything to register.

Other than that, my Sony head unit has held up pretty well. It’s mounted in one of those flip-front enclosures on top of the console, and I really don’t go out of my to take care of it.

what he said,i have been very happy with clarion…

The best speaker I have ever heard is the Bazooka Marine Speakers. They have round and 6x9’s, I have had many guests tell me the same thing…I highly reccomend these!

I guess it’s be better to say:

“When properly installed in a flush-mount configuration (so the face gasket seals) the faceplate of the CMD4/CMD5 is “splashproof” when closed, and the internal electrical components are conformally coated to resist damage from condensation or moisture in the air.”

Or in the alternative:

“Really? OMG!!! I told my friend that he could put his in the dishwasher!! Is that going to hurt it?!?!?”
