Made plans early in the week to push out for a grouper haul. Weather man had other ideas. Well, we would have none of that, so me, Swilly, Juicy, Millwood, Jimmy Houston, and Dirty oar pushed out Sunday morning around 8:30am in solid 20knot winds to 70’ with a few boxes of cigar minnows and other various assortments of bait.
First drop… bam, Swilly hooks up and slings a nice 12# gag over the gunnel. 30 seconds later, Dirty Oar throws a 10# gag over the side. Whooo, this is gonna be good! Wrong, the bite shut down… We ended up catching 852 undersized BSB, a 40# reef donkey, and a few ARS that were released.
It was rough, but the boat just plowed right through it. We anchored up in seas that exceeded 6’, but that new 22# anchor held like a champ. Fun day, and good times. Ran home at 32mph sipping a Beam and sprite.
2 gags
2 ARS released
40# AJ
892 BSB, kept a few good ones.
Yeah, we had a chummer on the boat but the rest of the crew was fishing going as hard as we could. It would have been tough trolling more than two rods in that crap, but bottom fishing was pretty straight forward. Anchoring was pretty easy to… 21knots of wind will pretty much pin you down on the numbers!

I have been wondering, is 15kts y’alls cutoff for running more than say 4 lines while trolling?
We struggle keeping 6 untangled on days the weatherman missed the forecast and we are out there trolling in 12-15kts.
I imagine Bly’s 30+ft riggers would help, but not alleviate the problem all together.
Nice job Billy, takes a special crew to put up with the sea state that day. We are going to finish up our grouper season the next two days, glad the bite turned off so there would be a few left for us!
