Mas Pescado 9-Apr-15 Dolphin are HERE! Pics!

Dolphin are HERE if… you don’t mind a little boat ride.

Had some family commitments so I had to sit this one out but was given the “privilege” of posting it on the intracaweb.

Met up with a couple of guys from Jacksonville on a previous trip that spoke volumes about the yellowfin fishery on the infamous Other Side! Bully has been chomping at the bit to try it with some new found knowledge. So Bully, Swilley, Big Mike, Wade, and Joe loaded down the Freeman 37 with fuel, bait, ice, and supplies and pushed off late Wednesday night with visions of swords and a sunrise tuna bite. Well things don’t always go as planned. Pulled off 2 nice swords and struggled finding the tuna.

However the maui are HERE! Caught 15 dolphin, and 7 weehoo. Couple of fire drills to get the 2015 season kicked off!

Great time on the water, long boat ride but these types of trips where in mind when Bully built the Freeman.

Learned a lot! We will get them next time!

Nice!

410 gallons, OUCH

410 gallons would fill my boat 14 times! Lol. However, I can only catch them fish at the market!!!

thanks for report

Very cool. Congrats on the fish. At least it’s a lot cheaper than it would have been this time last year.

Nice! thanks for the report!

Cool trip. Those fish (especially the wahoo) look very comparable to what they are hanging up down in the keys and South Florida right now. I wonder if the wahoo are spawning on the Charleston Bump and you are catching the juevies or if those fish are migrating up from S Fla and running up the backside of the stream.

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

Looks like an awesome trip. Equally impressed with the straight shot trails to and from home… Auto pilot? or is it that you have a Monster Freeman that plows on a straight-line? Or both. (Not used to that)

Simrad auto pilot. 35 out in the dark, 47 on the ride home! Auto pilot drove all 160 plus miles back to the jetties. Never thought I would use it much but that autopilot is very nice for offshore fishing. Not only running but trolling. Keeping the boat in a straight line while putting them out and when you have one of those fire drills with 7 rods singing.

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

Nice report, and I second the auto-pilot as a must, if you can swing it!!

That’s not bad fuel usage for 700 hp at that speed!! Glad yall had a good trip.

I thought Hoos were pretty much locals.

Thinking of heading out next Thursday 23rd. Seas looking decent for my 20’----finally! Taking my window of opportunity.

Cheers!

Before everybody starts thinking of going to the other side of the stream, remember you are outside the range of a coast guard helo if you get in trouble. If you are boarder line on their range, you are putting their lifes at risk trying to save you. 200+ miles out, it will take a CG cutter over 8 hours to respond. You should have 2 life rafts onboard because one may fail or be lost in a rough sea.

The Eurocopter HH-65 Dolphin is a twin-engined, single main rotor, MEDEVAC-capable Search and Rescue helicopter operated by the United States Coast Guard. It is a variant of the French-built Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin.

?Maximum speed: 135 mph (217.26 km/h)
?Range: 408.86 miles (658 km) that does not give enough gas to hover to get in the helo.
?Maiden flight: 1980
?Length: 38’ 1" (11.60 m)
?Wingspan: 39’ 1" (11.90 m)
?Manufacturers: Airbus Helicopters ? Aerospatiale

For the distance you ran, you could have fished out of Oregon inlet 5 days. 45 miles to the point. You could have fished Venice at least 2 days. And out of Palm beach, probably 2 weeks of fishing with 400+ gallons of fuel.

200 miles more and you could have made Bermuda.

Coulda woulda shoulda…

We fish Venice a few times a year, we are going to Oregen Inlet this year, trying something new isn’t a bad thing. We were no more than 140 miles directly offshore at any point.

We left with a Sat phone, an EPIRB, a life raft, 10 PFDs, and 2 throwables.

Could have taken the fuel money to Publix and bought a bunch of imported seafood too!

Some guys are enjoy reading about the adventure others want to create it!!
