Maverick 17 HPX Micro

Looking to replace my Mitzi 17. I need a skiff that floats shallow and can accomodate 2 anglers and me. If you own an HPX Micro or have first hand experience with one, I would appreciate your insight.

Talk to Capt. Newman, he rolls in a Micro and will give it to you straight. It does get very skinny.

The Mitzi 17 is a great skiff. It floats shallow, is ultra quiet and is easy to pole. Everything on the boat still works. Shoot, I kept the Mitzi longer than my first wife!

Sounds great. Are you selling it?

I recently spent a lot of time looking for a poling skiff. The biggest problem I had with the hpx was the small livewell and storage layout. Volume of storage was ok but it was arranged inconvieniently for me. It will depend to a large degree on how you fish. I also didnt want a center console. I think side or tiller is better for 2 or more while you are fishing. The console is great when you are motoring since it gives you one more seat but is in the way the rest of the time. I ended up with an east cape lostmen.

Thanks for the insight. I will pay close attention to your ■■■■■■■■ when I look at the HPX Mirco at the boat show. Tell me about your Lostmen?

The lostmen is a similar boat to the hpx in some ways. Both are purpose built technical poling skiffs. The lostmen is 18’ with a 72" beam. Drafts around 6" with a full load. Rated for 4 people which is unusual for this class of boats. 4 storage areas plus a large live/release well. Mine is a side console which gives you tons of fishing space. Basically flat bottomed with zero dead rise and sponsons. I have a 60 on mine and get about 33 out of it. The hull design will not give you as good a ride as the hpx but it will be more stable to fish out of. Not a huge difference but noticeable. Fit and finish are similar, both are nice boats. East cape also has some other models like the fury which will give you a better ride but give up a couple inches in draft. If you google around you will find tons of opinions. Try them all out and you’ll find one you like. (I have an extra platform on the bow that I don’t always fish with. Makes it look cluttered up front, really there is tons of room for two on the front deck.)

Graham Hegemeyer (Southern Tail Charters)is selling his Lostman.Great fishing tech skiff.
