May 11 offshore

Fortunate Son:
Thankx for the Governor’s Cup post in OFFSHORE DISCUSSION.
We ran out to the right a bit, caught up to several big boats just before the ledge, figured they knew more than we did about where the mahi were.
Not to be for us!
My SST interpreting skills rely on info learned via internet posts (some good info, I need more though) and I had not planned on going beyond the 72/75 break.
They kept on gooooing!
Just before the 100f mark one boat peeled off to starboard way up on the horizon. A few minutes later, a closer vessel bails off to starboard. I didn’t want to fall off the edge up ahead or something so we came to starboard. Within a minute all 7 boats we had in sight were off toward a new waypoint.
No less than 15 boats in sight for most of the day.
Long day trolling out there for 3 fish.
Some matts along a rip @ 1200+ but mostly scattered weeds on the inside.
Interesting to watch a few sporties backing down.
Hopefully we didn’t venture too close off them (didn’t hear gunfire).
We had higher expectations of some fish catching since so many 100 gph boats were out there. Did not know about a the GC tournament fish day. Glad there was a good billfish bite for them. I’m using my own made-up excuse “mahi aren’t where billfish are” excuse.
Malcolm, Doug (DFreedom) & his son Connor probably won’t buy it but I’m sticking to it. Justin’s hidden banana in the crab shell trash may have contributed too!

We were out there too. I’ll post a report in a minute.

Glad you got a few dolphin. Wr tried hard on that same temp break and didn’t even get a knockdown. We got on some action later though

“mr keys”

Man that’s discouraging the dolphin bite was off. Hopefully that will change by next week. Glad y’all managed a few anyway.

My CF rules to live by, learned mostly the hard way:

Don’t post anthying in reports other than a report
Never give the weight of a fish, even if you weighed it
Never mention catching a red snapper
Keep your opinion to yourself unless you are more knowledgeable about the topic than most everyone else. So if radiology comes up I will chime in. So far it has not.

I Can’t thank Dave and his 1st Mate Malcom enough for a great day. They were very patient with two offshore noobs and Malcom was quuite entertaining. I know 3 dolphin isn’t great by most people’s standards but, for two guys who have only ever been out offshore once before, we had a really good time. The ride was a bit sporty coming back in and I’ll admit getting up this morning was an adventure but, I wouldn’t have missed the opportunity. I see what attracts you offshore guys to that kind of fishing. It is a completely different world out there. The bottom fishing was pretty good (I thought)and we brought plenty of fresh fish home. I could do without the sharks, that’s a lot of work for nothing. I think even Connor got his fill of them.

The grilled dolphin we had tonight was delicious, can’t wait to try some of the other fish.

Thanks for the opportunity to spend the day with you and Malcom on that beautiful boat! My next wife is going to have money.

Oh, and I think you are right about the banana, I just thought Malcom’s magic chicken was strong enough to counter it.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?

With the way the winds have been blowing, any day on the water is a great day!

Tight lines,
Jason
