Mayflies

Why do they call a Mayfly a Mayfly because here in South Carolina they hatch in July and August?

This Picture was taken on Friday the 8th of August at Lake Marion SC. I was out evening fishing from 1830 hrs to 2200 hrs Thursday when this hatch happened. My boat looked like a tree with all the Mayflie that landed on it. The winds were calm and the fish were feeding on them . I did manage to land two nice blue catfish; one 30lb and one 24 lb. On Friday it was not as good with storm that came through with high winds and rain. Good catfish can be found on santee if the weather would work for us.

Been seeing them since May. My daughter just updates the name to, June, July or August Flies for which ever month is appropriate…

We had one day out at the Hatchery that was extremely foggy last season, and apparently we got there right after they hatched. The water didn’t have so much as a ripple on it, and the fog was crazy. There were mayflies sitting on the surface of the water by the scadzillions, and then they were all over us.

Obviously they don’t bite, but dang what a hassle. I had to get out the mosquito head net for my son, because his young patience went totally out the door about 1 minute into the craziness.

I’ve seen then on the dyke swarm at night in huge clouds in numbers that made me very, very uncomfortable lol. Harmless bugs, but still felt like an episode of the X-Files.
