Mayhem & Madness 2/28

Worked the ledge in SW Banks and then The Outcrop for about 4 hours Sunday trying to find a wahoo. Nothing! Surprised at the number of boats we saw working the same area. Thought I would see more reports, but maybe we were not the only unlucky ones that day. Water was a little cool at SW Banks and a couple degrees warmer at The Outcrop.

We did move in to 100’ and caught some really good size Beeliners and Blackfish. So that helped ease some of the frustration from lack of trolling success.

We scratched out a blackfin and some bottom critters. SW banks. No hoos to be found. I was shocked with the amount of bait on the sounder. 70 degree water temp.

Scored 1 BF Tuna on the hi speed troll…nothing else…same area so we were probably one of the boats you saw. Bottom fishing was ok.

Well I’m glad to hear we weren’t the only ones to get blanked. We trolled for several hours on Sunday out to 320 feet in the area of the SW Banks looking for a wahoo and not a (**() thing! The ride in with that nasty chop and wind was just the icing on the cake for a horrible day. Guess you can’t win em all.

I was the black 22 ft seahunt out there. We had two double knock downs. We only had two people on the boat, both knock down we only was able to get one in each time. One tuna and a 63 lbs wahoo. We also had one at the boat about a 40 lbs wahoo. He came off the gaff, I was so mad watching him swim away. But only two people on the boat, I should have been the gaff man.

I would post pic but I am new to this page.

Also I am new to high speed trolling, 4th time doing it and I am 5 for 6 for wahoo at the boat. If you guys have any advise for me I would love to hear it. The more I know the more I will catch.

Great start lunchbox! Our day paled in comparison.
I think things will pick up when the temp at the ledge is warmer. The gulfstream is still too far east for my taste.

Did not get a bite until 1130, water temperature was 71 at that point. Earlier was at 67, did not get a bite until much later.

Yep. Interestingly the warm 73-77 degree water came into 80 to 100’ fathoms a few weeks ago but its pushed way back out again.

From reports in North Florida, it should be a good year once the water cooperates. At least they are posting some really nice sized wahoo.Im assuming that will be in about a month.

my dad was out there on sunday too. he trolled for wahoo and never got a thing. We are still trying to learn the bottom fishing thing, and trying to get an idea of where to go so its not a empty box at the dock. Those make the filets expensive!

Lunchbox nice job on the wahoo sounds like you got the wahoo dialed in!!

Lunchbox, sounds like you are doing the some good things already. I am by far no expert on wahoo, but I do know they have really hard mouths and will shake their head like crazy to throw the hook. Also have heard many stories of the wahoo at boat side just rolling over and the hook comes right out. We try to keep line pressure on him even at boat side until the gaff is in and the fish is over the rail. I do this by not slowing down as much as normal when the fish is at boatside. With 2 of you on the boat, that makes it even more challenging. Hence, the “team” aspect of offshore fishing. Your ratio of catch vs hits is darn good. You are a lucky man if you consistently get 100% of them, IMO. Sounds like I left the area 30 minutes to early.

Tridogs, one of my crewmen shared those North Florida reports with me. Dang nice fish, hope to see them soon off SC.

Tbrown913, work the Comanche and Subway cars area. Fantastic Beeliner and Blackfish in that area. Bigger fish this time of year, but there year round. We also released a couple dozen ARS. The Cudas and AJ’s will piss you off in the warmer months.

Are those 113s in that pic? Stud fish!! That’s special if it was caught on the 113.

yes they are, my dedicated planer rod is a 114-6/0 but a little tunny actually hit that as we were reeling it in that wahoo slammed it 4 times at the surface, so my buddy drops back a ballyhoo on mono on one of the 113’s and he slammed it and dumped 3/4 of the reel before we slowed him down, we cleaned wahoo when we got home and found a solid chunk of tunny in his stomach

I have a 113 from the 70s and it has a picture of a sailfish on the side. They were made as big game trolling reels but they do it all and have been relegated mostly to bottom fishing with the advent of lever drag. I wouldn’t hesitate to put them in the trolling spread if the crew knows how to work the star drag.

Caught 1 Wahoo 44 lb at the Outcrop first 10 min of fishing, water temp was 65 degrees at the time. High speed trolling, nothing else the rest of the day or the following day. Good marks on bottom. Did try out at 600 feet, water was 69.5 just never could get to 70 degrees, one hit got off.
